I tried to attach a photo but got an error message that it was too big. Under your user profile it said you can attach a photo that is 80 X 80 pixels. I'm no techie so I thought that meant it could be a total of 6,400 kb. So I tried attaching a digital photo of me and the dog which in windows explorer said it was only 140 kbs. Any suggestions. My new tractor arrives on Monday and I want to be able to show you guys my new baby!

The filesize limit on attaching photos is 100Kb. You should be able to upload an 800x600 photo that has been compressed very easily, and the quality is not even noticeable.

Your profile picture should just be a thumbnail type photo because it will be displayed at a maximum of 80x80 pixels. Don't confuse 1 pixel as one byte in filesize. That's not how it works.

There have been many threads concerning photos, so I don't want to rehash it all again. Use the Search feature to find the threads on compression programs for reducing the filesize of your pictures.

Good luck.

If you don't already have a program for resizing easily, try downloading pixresizer as it is easy to use and does a great job.

For a profile picture, you should try for something around 5Kb.

If you enjoy the math: 80 x 80 = 6,400 pixels = 19,200 bytes (assuming 3 bytes per pixel). With even a modest amount of jpeg compression, you will easily get down to 5K bytes.

Buncha know-it-alls, eh? /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

Hi Randy, If I download that software pixresizser won't I end up with some spyware on my computer. The IT dept. at work tells us to never download any free programs. The old saying "Nothing is free". I know our pc at home runs slowler than dirt because of all the stuff the kids have loaded on? Did you have any problems. /forums/images/graemlins/confused.gif

I am not specifically aware of any issues with Pixresizer and spyware, but I would not say that it isn't a risk.

I can say that I first learned of it hear at home and have it on my computer with no issues that I am aware of. I also run spybot and ad-aware on a periodic basis to remove any spyware.

After using here for a while I ended up downloading at work as well because I needed something to resize for sharing photos at work. I have not run into any issues at work either.

As with anything, you need to decide for yourself if it is acceptable risk or not.

There are many good FREE programs out there. The reason they are free is to get you to use it. Most of these programs have many other features that you can get if you BUY their full-blown program.

John,

Just spent longer yesterday trying to post a pic than I did at the tractor Dealer buying my rig. Finally downloaded or uploaded whatever the term is that Pixresizer someone recommended and I actually made it work almost instantly.

If I can do it, anyone can

Spyware is a concern to all. But you can still use some of the 'free' programs. To be sure they do not add spyware behind the scenes you need another program called 'SpyBot - Search and Destroy'. It is also free. Very easy to use. It was recommended by Tech TV.
Hope this helps,

OK

Trying to be self sufficient and trying not to take up space for non-tractor stuff, I decided to google spy bot. Well, I got back umpteen jillion responses form nearly as many sites and my suspicious mind suggests some of those sites would just like to get into my 'puter. /forums/images/graemlins/mad.gif So, even though I "THINK" /forums/images/graemlins/crazy.gif I know which is the right site, could someone post it or at least PM me with it.

Thank you, Mike
