When brush hoging a friends back 40 found a tiller that had been there for over 20-30 years, all bearings spun, and now i have it at no cost. Still trying to find out the manufacture, and will be listing it in projects as well as it needs some mods. But I can't figure out how to post pic's of the project.

So are you going to add a more modern gearbox to it?

Wow. You have quite a job ahead.

The tines look almost new.

You might try an antique tractor site for your question. That is old enough that one of the ancients may have an idea about it.

The first thought that popped into my head is a room with 30 cranky grey haired men smoking pipes discussing antique tractor equipment.

If you got a part time job at 7/11 for minimum wage vs time and money this project will take....you would be ahead of the game with the job and able to buy a brand new tiller.
I know this from experience.

But when his neighbours new one quits, he will know how to repair it for him.. ;)

Maybe one of the "ancients" took it out to the back 40 and forgot he left it there :D But, hey, I'm a veritable spring chicken myself, having just reached "curmudgeon" status, and I forget stuff, too.

Anyone know what the gearshift was for? Forward and reverse rotation? High and low speed? Interesting idea you don't see on tillers these days.

Interesting! Looks like it's a belt driven design. Good luck getting it changed over to run off of a PTO shaft.

Easy swap if you find an old bushog right angle gearbox. Nice find. Was the the cut on the back where an engine was once mounted? MikeD74T
