If you got a part time job at 7/11 for minimum wage vs time and money this project will take....you would be ahead of the game with the job and able to buy a brand new tiller.
I know this from experience.

But some of us love a challenge!

Go Pete.

I have heard of old Howard tillers with a gear box. You had to put the tiller in gear before use and it was powered by the tractor PTO. I'm not saying that I know that is what you have I'm just saying I have heard of such thing.

I am planning of mounting a brush hog gear box on it, and no, there was no motor on it, the pictures were taken after I started taking the "hot wrench" to it.

Just ordered a $119 brushhog gear box from agri supply. Should be here in a week or two. I figure that I will have about 200 bucks into it by the time it is painted. (not including the fuel to go gathering the parts)

Will post pictures of the progress.

After you get it working you will be very familiar with every inch of it and will be able to maintain and use it for a long time. I would jump all over one to rebuild like that. Be sure to post pics as you go.
I have been looking for a good deal on one. My brother found one that he said is old and gear drive and too big for my tractor but he said that wouldn't be a problem if it is cheap enough. He said I could just cut a little off of each end

Or.....you could just remove a few tines from each end....and get a similar result.
