My wife worries about me in retirement. She says I should pay more attention to what's going on in the World via World News. Says I should travel more. My stance is I spent my entire adult life paying attention to what the rest of the World was doing, which caused me to travel to some very crappy places on this Planet dealing with some very crappy people. Now I don't have to do that.

Thoughts and prayers to all my Aussie friends down under!!!

I hear you Richard . . .

My son in law is headed there next week. He is a BLM firefighter in Wyoming. He is a crew chief for helicopters dropping retardants.

Checking in from Tassie & I'm OK.

Nearest fire is in Fingal, it started to the North of that town (Mangana) by a fire-bug (arsonist). Big fire that eventually jumped over the town (embers) and started a South fire. There are a few colliers in the area and a 'coal washing' depot. Today both fires were downgraded to "PATROL" so they've got a handle on them but if the wind gets up it could flare again.

I drove through Fingal today and there were observable wisps of white smoke coming from fairly inaccessible areas on both sides.

I have had smoky days here in St Helens, some from the Fingal fires and some that has drifted all the way from Victoria.

It's dry here and we've got a fair bit to go yet 'til the end of this year's fire season.

You have so few places in Australia that actually have trees, and they seem to be somewhat isolated from each other; in pockets. I do have to wonder if some of this is arson. Or somehow intentional. The starts seem to me to be too well spaced/placed to be natural. And I know Aussies are fully aware, and educated on fire safety. So all these ignitions, spread out over all these isolated tree-ed areas, doesn't seem normal to me. One can blame the drought, but that doesn't explain the simultaneous way these fires got started.

Of course 300km away everything can be completely different but there was a wind change yesterday which did not help in any way at all, fire bombers are back on duty as far as I can tell but I have noticed that they are choppers and a biggish Boeing, used to be crop dusters but I haven't seen evidence of any this year, maybe too small for such a huge front.

Meanwhile 1400 miles away in New Zealand the smoke was changing the colour of daylight. This photo was taken at Pakari top of the North Island.

Several years ago my friends in Colorado were fighting fires close to their home. They sent me these pics. Has an eerie beauty while at the same time very threatening. Humans are fascinated by fire until it's chasing them.

in the middle but not around the edge especiaaly on the east, lightning is common throughout the heaviy forested high country known as the great dividing range which runs from queensland through to south australia, the desert is in the middle bits, we even have snow and ski resorts, notjust bush and blowflies.
storm fronts follow these ranges which accounts fot the fire front.
It is a long walk with the zippo to stat a fire in such remote areas/
