Sweet! Once the tractor hits 8 miles per hour it's back to 1955.

That chapter will turn into a tome if the clutch is rusted to the flywheel, or as GP would say "That chapter will tern into a tomb"

Rock Knocker, while technically correct, forgot a few real life steps. They are: after turning the key, go to town and buy a battery charger and hook it up (assuming there's power in the barn, otherwise go to town and buy some extra long jumper cables because the ones in the truck won't reach); while waiting for the battery to charge go back to town and buy a compressor and pump up the four flat tires (unless there's no power in the barn, in which case it's go back to town and get either a portable air tank and search all over town to find someone to fill it, or find a place with one of those dodads that you put in a spark plug hole that will fill your tires once the engine is running, or get a 12 volt compressor and spend the next two days waiting for the tires to fill); while continuing to wait for the battery to charge and see if the tires would stay up, clean the varnish and gum out of the carb, fuel tank and fuel lines; put fresh fuel in, grind the starter until the battery goes dead again, find out that at least one of the tires won't hold air, then go back to town to buy a chain so you can just pull the darn thing out with the little subcompact car you drive, find out it won't budge it, then go see if the neighbor will bring *his* tractor over and drag it out. :) If he wants to put it back in the barn, well that's another couple of chapters. And I hope this is an adult book, because if you want the mostly muttered but sometimes very loud speech to be realistic, well, that's not for children's books! :)

Good one, or as I would say, good wun.

Clean gum out of the carburetor? It's diesel, no carburetor.

Oops, I goofed. But the battery and tires still are still valid. And wouldn't there be water/algae in the diesel?

Not sure why you want to go into such detail about moving a tractor unless it's critical to the story line, but seeing as you asked:

Couple of pretty good posts here, even the tongue-in-cheek ones are pretty much on target and informative. Something I haven't seen: If it's cold out, he'd need to hit the glow plugs for several seconds before starting the tractor. Assuming the 850 is the same as my 750 was, that would mean turning the key to the left and holding it for a 10 count or so before turning it to the right to kick the starter in.

Trans in neutral and clutch down is important. Differential in neutral is unnecessary. May need to ensure the PTO is out of gear too, there's another safety interlock associated with that.

PHPaul: Details should be accurate no matter how meaningless or meaningful.
