Automotive Alternator on Compact Tractor?

my point was, the 1 wire conversions are usually a few bucks more than the 3 wire setup.. and the 3 wire is really no more hassle to wire up.. even in a simple arangement with a stationary engine.. just use a 2$ idiot lamp.. and then you hav ethe benefit of a visual charge indicator.

used/salvaged checked 3 wire is about a 25$ junkyard item.. our local yard has a 55g barrell full of them.

it's not a win/lose issue.. just trying to get some facts out on the table. I got a friend with a john deer tractor that heard it was 'the thing to do' to put a 1-wire alt on his tractor vs rebuilding his generator... by the time all was said and done he had more into the -2- alternators, different belt, and new 12v battery plus new 12v lamps than he would have for the set of brushes and bushing his old generator with serviceable belt and 6v battery and working 6v lamps had. you see.. his machine doesn't rev high enough to excite the 1-wire unit... tached out it turns about 900 rpm!! 3 wire worked and started charging at about 400 rpm!!.. store wouldn't take the 1-wire back as it was a used electrical part.. go figure.. :(
