Just got a notice from Grisoft that the free (for personal use) service will end in Jan'07. New service will cost $30/yr. Anyone have another free or cheap solution? Would prefer staying with Win XP and IE.
Many thanks for any options.

Yep, Has not been free for awhile just updates to the 7.0 version. But no fear the business model worked so well there are plenty of others that are free

Maybe I'm reading something wrong, but I understood that AVG 7.1 Free Edition will no longer be available after January 15.

However, I just upgraded to AVG Free Edition 7.5, not AVG Anti-Virus Professional Edition 7.5

Did I miss something or do I need to do something else?

I don't know if you missed anything or not. BUT, I sure missed thinking about a free upgrade to the new version. I'm dowloading it now. Thank you for making me use my noodle when I, clearly, wasn't using it

An alternative to AVG is Avast!

It's free and just as good (if not better). I've been using it for almost a year now with no problems. Updates just about every day. And it's not a resource hog like Norton.

I tried AVG a couple years ago. I don't like. Shortly after installing it (two days actually), it let a nasty trojan/homepage hijacker slip through. That created a huge headache. I don't think I could ever try AVG again. My current Nortan AV has expired back in August. I am thinking that when it does get old, I will remove it and try Avast. I've heard good things about it. There is also another free AV program out there called AntiVir. I have heard good things about that one, too.

AntiVir PersonalEdition Classic - More than Security

Here's the answer to my own question...

AVG's free anti-virus to continue - Computeract!ve

Whew... that answers that question.
I was worried for a second that I didn't download the Free Edition, but possibly a free trial or something!

Confused me, I guess it is free still, Numerouse people complained about it no longer being free and in fact bought it. I just switched, Thanks, Oh well live and learn

They really made it confusing on their website-- the links to buy and download the paid version are everywhere, but you have to dig around to find the free version!
