Finally, carbaryl powder (Sevin, etc) applied to nest hole will quickly kill the colony.

So thats what the stuff is?? I have a "farmer friend" that SPRAYS his fields with a "liquid" version of ??? and it may be just that.?

My old pappy used to be a beekeeper and worked his hives bare handed and without a headgear EXCEPT for a wide brimmed straw hat...no veil at all..* shudder*..lol I could help..bare handed...but HAD TO HAVE a "net" to keep them out of my face!!!!

Robbing hives and extracting honey in the fall was an experience!! First time I ever saw "20 bazillion" bees clinging to a screen door trying to get INTO the garage ( no AC and had the doors open and screen doors shut)

Something coems to mind that his bees were "3 banded Italians"..? ( or maybe 5 banded Italians?? )

Sounds familiar - today I ran over a ground nest of small black hornets - a sting you never forget, while bush hogging my old farm fields. Didn't get stung, kept the tractor moving. Went back to the truck and got a can of wasp/hornet killer. After a hour I drove by about 20' from the nest where they were swirling by the hundreds - gave them a good dose of concentrated spray. Drove by 3 times, spraying each time. Didn't want to push my luck, will check it again tomorrow. Have more weeds/brush to cut in that area, but may have to wait until the first freeze.
