I was heading to the bank today and around the corner came White Thunder.

I heard the turbo-whine before I heard the roar of the exhaust.

Now, as a preface, I'm not into trucks very much. If I had one, it'd be one that I can sling rocks into and bang the tar out of. If I ever had a "good looking" one (however one defines that for themself), I'd ALWAYS be self conscious of scratching it etc...

Ok... enough disclaimers

This had dual rear wheels, so I suppose it was a "350 size" Was it a Ford/Chevy/Chrysler, I have NO clue as it simply ROCKETED past me. In my life, I do NOT think I've ever ever EVER seen a full sized diesel truck accelerate like this thing did. I'm not sure I've seen many contemporary cars accelerate like this thing did. It absolutely lit it up and screamed down the road (actually, kinda dangerous in hindsight, but impressive none the less)

I wish I'd seen what it was my guess, (and that's all it is ... a guess) Ford (I'm ducking from all the "other" lovers)

This monster, which was otherwise unremarkable in appearance, was awesome and I must admit... got me hankering a bit for a truck.

I don't much want to start any truck wars, but part of me is very intrigued as to what it was and what was powering it, cause it sure sounded sa-weeeeeeeeeeeeet.

Oh, and for anyone that wants a laugh at my expense, this was on a trip to the bank. I was almost TO the bank before I realized I'd left all the deposits back at office, so had to backtrack and redo the trip. /forums/images/graemlins/tongue.gif

Richard that was me in my 1993 Ford F250 non turbo IDI diesel. The whine you heard must have been a front bearing. While I don't have duals as you described, I think I can describe what illusion you saw. Becasue of the rapid speed my truck accelerates at, 0 to 60mph in 4 (minutes) you were seeing an anomoly not unlike that one see's in the desert from the heat waves, aka, a mirage. Glad I could help straighten this one out for you.

Wasn't mine.... although I did surprise one of those buzzy little cars some teens drive today in the 350 with a 3rd gear trip to 3,000rpm... /forums/images/graemlins/cool.gif
Gets downright zippy after 2200 or so.... I like turbos can ya tell?

Do the proper things to some of the diesels and their aint much that will take em at a light.

Mine just tows and slowly at that. I get to drive in the slow lane and whatch everyone go by.

Egon, I love the way my automatic transmission shifts into high gear at about 45 mph when I've got the engine rpm up about 2,200. It feels like I'm on the launch pad and somebody just lit the wick. Wow! 252,000 miles and it's still a thrill to feel all that Cummins torque kick me in the seat of the pants. I hope I feel the same way at 350,000. /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

Mine always has a camper on it and usually a trailer behind so that feeling don't happen. Just can't listen to the radio when going up a hill. Mine seems to pull best at about 2250 RPM.

Hi Richard,

I was watching the show "Trucks" on Spike TV a few months ago when Stacey did a power upgrade on a Diesel truck. I don't remember which model they used, but they wound up with over 425 HP at the REAR WHEELS , and over 700 lb ft of torque. They installed a Banks exhaust system, a computer chip, a turbo, nitrous kit, and a propane kit. Then Stacey proceeded to fry the rear tires. It was very impressive. /forums/images/graemlins/shocked.gif /forums/images/graemlins/shocked.gif /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

There have been claims out of up to exceeding 700hp from a Cummins. No interior motor work; all outside the longblock. Things were done like bigger turbo, injectors, exhaust, intercooler, chip ect. I think it was discussed here a year or so ago.

I saw a off road magazine a few months back that showed all-diesel drag races. These guys were running 11's. There was some guy running a Cummins dragster; twin turbo job. It was much faster...

I read something about someone (possibly Cummins) pushing the 5.9 to limit horsepower-wise. They took a stock bottom end motor and modified the turbo, fuel delivery, etc. to the point of 1200 hp on a dyno before it finally gave in and broke a stock crankshaft. Quite a feat !
