There is 4-5 chips out there for diesels @ $500-$700
which will add right at 125 hp and dam near 200 tq.
Try gettin that kind of power out of a gasser for that
kind of money /forums/images/graemlins/shocked.gif
I dont think I'll ever buy another gas truck.

I think that TRUCKS was on a DODGE, big vlue one . very nice upgrades and left a good burnie too! They installed a 3 step over chip, which they could run fuel saver stock, mid power addon or super power, really changed multiple things, standard computer, but changed the readings the computer recieved TRICKING it into thinking boost, NOX and such were different than they really were. the doo dad installed between the factory wire harnes and the factory computer. then you got a dash mounted stiwch for towing and high perf or stock... very cool little item! boss bought dodge 1 ton with 4 doors and big turbo charged dinosaur burner! /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif nice tow rig much better than the chevy, (about 6" higher though) and we didn't test the fords, as he said he will never buy a NEW year where there was a major change...

anyhow the dodge rides and pulls BETTER than the chevys by far, but I think the old fords ride/drive better by far over both. not sure of the NEW ones, nbever drove pulled or rode in one newer than 95 or so. (but have soem avid truck hot foot drivers swear by FORD then if no ford then dodge and then TOYOTA over the chevys lol /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

The new diesel trucks are easy to add power to (Cummins, Powerstroke and Duramax). The Powerstroke Diesel (made by International for Ford trucks) was de-tuned from the factory to meet gov't guidelines. The aftermarket-ers took advantage of this by reprogramming the factory ECM (computer). I had a custom chip/programmer burned for my truck, installed a 4" exhaust system and upgraded the air intake. The truck is making somewhere around 400hp & 800lbs torque. It smokes a little bit but it runs like a scalded ape. I've talked with several guys out there that are pushing over 1000lbs torque. It'll pull my tractor faster than the trailer tires can handle! It's fun to blow the little Honda's off the road from stop light to stop light. They never expect it from a 4x4 diesel with a toolbox and 55 gallon diesel tank in the bed!

I also had to do some transmission upgrades!

If you can stand the noise and the smell, diesel trucks are the way to go. Besides, they tend to last longer than a gas engine!

It's amazing how fast these diesels are! Problem with chipping them is your power train warranty is out the door when you install them. Like mitchdb says, be ready to do some serious tranny upgrading if you start adding power. I think the engines are de=tuned because the stock trannys cant handle the torque.

For me, the 305 HP, 555 lb-ft torque Cummins is plenty (at least till the 100k mile warranty is up /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif)

How about modifying so you get the best fuel economy? Can you "chip" for that. I'm not interested in beating anything off the line, just better performance all the way around then my current set up, a 93 F 250. Do you think the Dodge truck with a manual transmission and diesel, 3.73 rear end could get 20 mpg? Rat....

Rat,

My 99' F350 PSD/6spd. regularly does 19.5 overall so I don't see why not.. Plus, it's fun to row your own gears in a diesel... /forums/images/graemlins/cool.gif

I have an 01 Dodge w/H.O.Cummins, 6 sp manual tranny and get consistant 21.. I drive like an old man and don't go far each day, about 17 miles of stop and go.. there are days that drop to 18 and once I got 26 with a heck of a tail wind pushing... When I pull AndyMA's TN, which is bumping 10,000 then, with all the steep up and downs, it drops to 16 or so.. this is stock and nothing done.. I have no desire to add chips or anything else..

on the www.dieselstop.com, on of the guys signature states something to the fact

"my lug nuts require more torque than you honda makes"

I love my powerstroke with Western Diesel tow chip it runs strong and smooth.

I have a 93 non turbo Ford 7.3 approximately 170K miles. It has been reliable, but I frequently go over 7000' in elevation and find that even at 5000 my power is pretty weak, worse then that though is the amount of black smoke that pours out the back. I find myself always having to back off on the throttle. I put in a new pump. all new injectors and nothing changed. Seeing the new Dodge, Ford and Chevy diesels certainly makes one think hard about wanting to replace it. Since Cummins quieted down their engine, it is getting to the top of the list in my quasi search.

I have never bought a new vehicle. How does one go about searching for a great price on new vehicles? Do you go out of state as well to look for the best price? I'm in the information gathering stage of considering a new truck. I have all the time in the world to wait. My basic quick look on the internet via Ford, Dodge and GM as well as Edmunds has somewhat tilted me toward Dodge, a vehicle I never thought I would consider. Possibly 4 doors and a short bed. Probably 4WD because our family has a place in Tahoe and we go there in the winter. It looks like the ST or SLT would be fine. Manual just because it's less costly and slightly better fuel economy? No accessories I can think of or care about. Anyone regret getting the 4 door?
