I would have to agree. While it is interesting to look at their size difference, I should think the millions of miles logged on the various engines and just where they failed when they did would be the better way to accurately acess this. My guess is that it would not be at the rod providing oil was at each journal. All that said, I am a bit partial to the Cummins if for no other reason then it's pure simplicity and the new quieter design.

I'm not knockin the cummins in any way, in the early 90's, it was the best choice for a diesel. But what was the use in a diesel that would run several hundred thousand miles when the body and structure around it would not. I've heard of several early Dodge's that would still be running today if the truck hadn't fallen apart around it. Besides, there is more to an engine than rods.....................electrical problems, fuel delivery and transmissions seem to be the biggest problems!

That being said, today's diesel truck choices are based on personal preference, the motors run about the same and there are a ton of aftermarket items for all. All 3 make an awesome truck, my only problem with Dodge is that they are foreign owned. I do realize that all have parts made outside the US but that helps keep the prices down!

Exactly. let's not forget the Cummings is a six cylinder and the Duramax is a 8. It only makes sense that if the displacement is fairly equal that the stroke on the Dodge will be bigger. IMO there is no clear leader of the three. It can get down to which cab deseign you like best if you are open to considering all three labels. I've had two Duramaxes with great luck. I average 19 MPG, no smoke except start ups on very cold mornings and I can't even imagine going back to a gasser. Diesel here this year at one point was .50 gallon less than regular ! /forums/images/graemlins/blush.gif /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif I do have some mods on this one including a massive 2 micron Cat fuel filter. In regards to chips voiding your warranty just remember, out of sight out of mind ! /forums/images/graemlins/smirk.gif Most plug in easily and unplug the same. Now if I had my way I'd take the GM body and ride, The Ford suspension a Cummings motor and a Allison tranny !

That is not a very good comparison at all. The cummins is an inline six and the powerstroke is a V-8. It's like comparing an orange to a pineapple and saying a pineapple is better for you because it's bigger. The bigger rod in this case also means nothing to the durability as you are not comparing even remotely the same class of engines. The only thing that is the same is that they both run on diesel.

Now wait a minute! I have a Cummins, but <font color="red">Farmall red </font> courses through my veins /forums/images/graemlins/cool.gif So I should really like that <font color="red">International </font> "Power Stroke", but I like my Cummins /forums/images/graemlins/shocked.gif

So, really, you should not be likin that Powerstroke, but instead a <font color="green">big green Deere diesel</font> /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

Ok, ok, it was <font color="yellow"> corny </font> but I could not resist /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

They are pretty equal, and giving one the edge is just a tiny little edge 'cause the other will step up a notch as soon as the others do. It IS impressive to look at that rod compared to the others, but it takes LOTS more parts all working together to make the final package. The best bonus is, they are so competeitive, that we, as customers, really get good product offerings.
