axle/brake rebuilds

Did you price out a replacement axle? I have a feeling that it would be less than $600 an axle.

Notice my $600 an axle is WITH rubber.

A new 6000lb axle is roughly $600. with rubber a new axle would be roughly $900 ($1800 for entire trailer)


as to the disc conversion

the disc kits on etrailer are hydraulic.

a disc kit for one axle is $250. thats all hardware for the axle. you still need $614 electric over hydraulic actuator, and then plumbing which if you choose to go with the kit is another $145. so to convert a dual axle trailer would cost $1259 and still have to buy rubber at another $600 ($1860 entire trailer)

So the way i see it, its still cheeper to rebuild with what you have than buy new.

Cheaper in the short term to rebuild ? Yes.
You are still stuck with 1920s electric brakes and all that goes with them.
I wouldn't go with drum brakes again on ANY vehicle - car, truck, motorcycle,,, though on tractors the choices are more limited (-:
Oil filled hubs are NICE - I never have to pump grease in there and not know if it is just squirting out the rear seal, to eventually find its way to the shoes, I just LOOK at the oil level.
If moisture gets in there (it hasn't yet) it will turn milky.
Brake pad replacement is NOTHING compared to shoes and all the nasty little springs, levers and (claimed to be) self adjusting stuff - Bahh, all DONE with that.
Magnets that rub around the inside of the drum ? THAT idea should never have got out of the experimental stage.
