I am thinking about trading my BX 2200 in and buying a 2620. The primary reason for this is that I just bought a 10 acre field and plan to build there in the next 1-2 years. The field is smooth enough that I can mow 3-4 acres of it now with a ZTR (I bought the field from my brother and have helped him maintain it for the last several years.) The rest is rough enough from old ruts, etc, that a rotary cutter is needed.

My brother has a 33hp Case-IH and a 5' cutter. While it takes 4-5 hours to mow the rough 6 acres, it's time I don't mind spending, and it only needs to be done 2-3 times a year. A tractor that will handle a 5' light/medium duty cutter will be enough for me.

Here are my questions:

1. Will the 2620 handle a 5" rotary mower cutting field grass? I want it to handle the job of mowing 18-24" grasses easily, taking full swaths at a reasonable pace.

2. Eventually once I build, I will want to prep and seed 2-3 acres. My brother has a 5' roto-tiller. I will use this to ready the soil. Even though he has his tractor that I could use, I would rather use mine. Can the 2620 handle a 5' tiller?

3. I also plan to smooth out the ruts eventually, and mow the rest of the acreage every 3 weeks or so. I would want to use a 6' RFM for that. Again I would expect this to cut 8-10" grass down to 3-4", cutting a full swath at 4-5 mph. Can a 2620 handle this? I have a 52" Toro ZTR, so I would not be using the 2620 for the 2-3 acres by the house.

4. I will buy a FEL with this tractor. I will have a 400' driveway, but I now take care of similar driveway (plowing, grading) with my BX, so I know the 2620 will handle that chore. I will living next door to my brother, who owns a excavating company and has a Case 650 dozer, a case 580M backhoe, and a Bobcat tracked skid steer. I won't need to do much else with a tractor!!

Thanks for reading this long post. I am looking foward to your advice.

I have a B2620, and use a 4' rotary cutter with it, and feel it is a good match, and plenty big for the tractor. It is not so much a matter of the hp to run it as it is the weight, and size of the implements. Five foot cutters hang out there quite a ways, and are heavy. Five foot tillers are too. I would really think hard about moving up to the next size B like the B3200, or B3030 if I were planning on mostly five foot implements. They are still very nimble, and yet just enough larger to handle that kind of thing with more grace.

I've heard of people running a five foot bush hog with a BX without the top link being used. And we see four foot tillers used on BX's!

I really agree with what Chuck says of the next larger chassis being able to handle all the machines you are looking at carrying the loads easier! Ask your dealer to hook up your perspective five foot mower to a B-series, any of the three models would work but be sure the loader is on and you have the tires you would like and drive it around his yard.

It is not to say that you can't run those machines with the B-series especially with the three range transmission and with the larger tires you will find that those ruts won't bother you as much as the tires won't fall into them as easily as with teh BX.

With having a finish mower for your refined yard it could mean you could go bigger, but you do have an advantage of your brothers equipment next door.

I agree with everyone else you're marginal with some of the implments. The tillers probably not a big deal because that sounds like a one time use deal. As for the bushog and RFM. I had a B7800 I ran a 6 foot landpride RFM on. It pulled it fine except on hills/slope. If you have a flat yard you should be fine but any hill will slow you down considerably. You might also do some reading about a flail mower. You may be able to kill 2 birds with one stone. You should be able to use it in place of both the finish and rough cut mower.

Will,

As everyone has advised............Bigger is always better.

That being said, I believe the 2620 will easily handle what you are asking of it.

1. Cutting your field w/ a 60" rotary cutter. If, as you say, you will only be cutting 2' field grass monthly on a smooth field, get a quality light duty rotary cutter and it will work perfect. I cut my field w/ a 5' Bush-Hog RazorBack and my BX24. My field is smooth and I cut grass/weeds 2-3 times per year. It is usually 4-5 feet tall and I take full swaths at 3-4mph with no bog of the engine. Attached is a pic for the non-believers.

2. I use a 48" KK tiller with my BX24 w/ no issues. A one-time use of a 60" tiller with the 2620 should work fine.

3. I have no experience w/ 6' RFM. But, 23 HP easily run a 5' MMM. It goes to reason that 26 HP should cut 8-10" grass with a 6' RFM.

4. You already know the answer.

Any way that you go, good luck!

Thanks for all the responses.

Chuck, is the 4' cutter as wide as your tractor? I'm not adverse to a 4' cutter, I always have found that implements that cover the tractor's width to be easier to use.

The tiller use would be one time, as I have no commercial or gardening uses planned. I could use my brother's tractor for that, but I do like to be independent.

Would a 54" rotary cutter be a better option? I see that Woods makes one.

I'm not adverse to a bigger tractor, but the trade on the 2620 is something I'm very comfortable with finacially, and it's about the biggest tractor I could haul on my trailer. Bigger tractor=bigger trailer=more money spent.

Oh well, maybe I'll get a quote on a B3030 and/or a B3200. Thanks for all the help so far.

The 4' cutter just about covers my wheel tracks, and there is no noticable packed grass, or anything. I find in brush, etc. that it works well too. A 54" cutter would be good too. The dealer that I bought mine from installed the lower mounting pins on the RC a bit lower ( Bush Hog Squealer) to give me a bit more lift I guess. Still, with the loader off it is a good balance for the tractor, and I would want to leave the loader on for anything larger for sure. I have mowed a couple of small steep areas, and it has worked well there too.

I don't have very good pictures of it in use, but you can get an idea from these I took while working on my trails.

Thanks for all the advice. I did buy the B 2620, and split the difference with a 54" Woods Heritage cutter. The dealer was easy to work with, and felt the 54" was probably the best choice. The tractor is still in the crate, so I'll be picking it up in a few days.

I had them weld on bucket hooks, put a block heater on, load the tires with windshield washer fluid, and they gave me the materials for the 50 hour service. Kubota also has extended the 0% financing for 48 months.

I hate to say goodbye to my BX. It has been my faithful companion for 9 years and 1250 hours!
