I'm sorry. I shouldn't have replied to your post. This isn't an argument that I am willing to get into.

Were you meaning a true CD or a CD-Writer drive. If you meant writer, I don't think anyone here would disagree with you.

I think there has been lots of confusion about old dos software, cds, win 95 & 98, and win98se. Early versions needed cd rom extensions.. mscdex.. etc. and a cdrom driver.

Win 95 and up picked up on atapi / eide cd's pretty much natively... most bois programs for system back when 98 cam out even had atapi booting capability.. etc.

Cd burners of course reqire burning software.. no arguments there.

I remember I bought my copy of 95 on CD. Was OK to do the upgrade, but later ended up having to do a format for whatever reason. I then realized I had to install DOS, Install Windows 3.1, Install Sound Card, Install CD-ROM drivers, then install Win95, and update by Sound Card & CD-ROM software and driver because the 3.1 stuff didn't work right under 95. Oh man, I don't miss those days.

( What I'm sending him is an upgrade of 98 to 98SE that I had gotten from Microsoft. He doesn't need to do any of the rename or anything. Actually if he does, it'll have problems. You just boot normally, insert the CD and go. )

Right you are! I believe I mentioned "if it's an oem copy" in my post.
Note for future referance, if you ever need to do a fresh install with an upgrade disk, just wait till it asks you and insert the win95 disk long enough for it to say ok and install without upgrading.. I don't like upgrading other than 98 to 98se. I've had good luck with that one and that one only.

I've been playing with a cd burning software called burnatonce and have really liked it. Short - sweet - and very fast. You can d/l it off the net.
Course, at home, I'm generally using debian linux.
