B&S engines

I'm going to be buying a low-end riding mower, probably in the $1000-1500 range. Seems as if most have B&S engines, and there are a few models. I'll probably end up with a 42" cut and somewhere between 17 and 20hp. Are any of the B&S engines particularly good/bad? How important is the pressure lube vs splash?

Check on the service rating of the engine in question. B&S makes many different quality engines.

OK....what's the scale used in a service rating? And where does one find the info? It doesn't show up in the "detailed information" I find for the various mowers on SEARS.COM, for instance.

Do a search for briggs&stratton . You'll find thier website and should be able to get the information on the engine you are interested in.

Things to consider are cast iron sleeves, overhead valves and pressure oil system with filter if possible.

Being computer illiterate I'm not sure how to transfer the web site from there to here.

Thanks Egon and Steve. Sears has a "sale" going with some models in my range. Interestingly, one 18 hp 42" deck has the pressure and filter lube, while another with a 20 hp engine, which costs more, has a splash system. The more expensive one does have auto transmission, but the less expensive one has a cast iron front axle while the other one is formed steel. I guess they wouldn't want to put all the goodies in the same package, unless you go for big $$$.
