B1700 clunking sound on startup

B1700 with 1200 hrs. For the last few weeks, sometimes on startup, as I'm turning the key and it's starting to turn just before the engine catches, there is a clunking sound. It seems to be close, like it is coming from under hood right close to the back up near the instrument panel. Sometimes it's a smaller sound, sometimes a kinda ka-klunk-klunk, and sometimes nothing.

Any idea what that may be?

possibly missing teeth on the ring gear ??

How long have you had your B1700...A mighty, little tractor...!

Yeah it's great, surprises people all the time 17hp hahaha. Bought it used about 8 years ago with 400 hrs. Use it in a 2 acre market garden, rototiller and bucket.

I'm not at all a mechanic, but the ring gear sounds like it could be right. I'll try and check it out, and maybe get a better description on the sounds.

Haha I just noticed my join date for this forum, it's like a testimonial for Kubota, looks like I joined when I got the machine in 2004, and haven't had to post here before!

I have the rototiller almost always attached so that's a bit of extra weight.

The only time I've had a traction problem with the turf tires is in slick, wet, compacted manure, when loading up the spreader in rain, which is rare and can be finessed. Otherwise, they've been a plus since I do some tight mid-season tilling in individual garden beds, and it's an advantage not to be tearing up the paths.

I kinda love my lil Kubota. : )
