4x4 lever seems to engage, at least the detent in the lever feels like it is. however the front axel will not "drive". I had intermittent 4x4 engagement for about 50 yards up a hill dragging a box scraper when all of a sudden rear started to spin like I had a full loaded scraper...lifted the scraper to lighten the load and crept fwd...cycled the lever out and in to 4x4 crept a little more then rear wheels started to spin again. I dropped the FEl to lift front axel pushed the gas and front axel would not drive...I NEED my 4x4 where do I start??? Thanks all!!!

Sometimes only one front wheel turns. Perhaps you were looking at the wrong one.

See the pdf attached for the front drive shaft and lever components. (The 1550 is virtually the same as the 1750). Perhaps you can repeat your test with front wheels raised and get someone to observe if the front drive (propellor) shaft is turning. That might help to determine whether the problem is at the front or back end. I'd also have a close look at the lever. Particularly the pin '090'.

And those detent balls '110' can get very dirty and rusty. Perhaps its not fully going into gear.

Does your tractor have the Bi-Speed Turn option? If so, make sure that it isn't engaged as it wasn't meant to carry a load, only for assisting the front end thru sharper turns.

Bi-speed is an option for the front axle that overdrives the tires when turning angle exceeds "X" number of degrees in either direction. It helps the front end pull around corners and do less turf damages when 4wd is engaged.

If you have bi-speed turn you will have a very prominent lever on the right hand side of the transmission tunnel between your knees. You can't miss it really.

ok got the front end up on jack stands and lifted the rear w/ a floor jack. started it and watched the front drive shaft rotate but the front wheels will not rotate. so I believe the issue is in the front gearbox. any ideas?

Not really, and my tractor is 300 ks away so its hard to picture what I'd do. But I think I'd try to narrow down where the problem might be. Rotate the wheels, does the other wheel turn? Remove the drive shaft and try to turn the joint by hand, how easy is it to turn? But I'd definately visit a Kubota dealer and ask the spare parts guy or a mechanic some questions before I started seriously pulling things to pieces.

Did you download the parts manual? And did you work out if you have bi-speed turn. I vaguely remember being told not to leave it constantly in bi-speed turn or something can break. (Thats the sort of thing a spare parts guy usually knows).

I actually do have bi-speed turn....The lever has been removed but the linkage is still hooked up to th gear box on the front axel. I couldnt move it in or out so I assume its stuck in the engaged position. I'll be calling the Kubota Mech locally after the holidays. Thanks for the help.

My money says the problem lies in the Bi-speed area. If bi-speed is engaged and a heavy load placed on it, it will slip as it has clutches( similar to the older positraction units) to keep from overloading and these could easily burn up. Time to Purchase a Work Shop Manual and become intimate with your 1750!! It's not a hard job but is time consuming as I've had mine apart twice on the 2400. You WILL need a torque wrench if you take it apart as the pinion depth and clutch packs have a specific torque setting.
