B2320 PTO generator speeds

Your choice but unless you are going to put many many hours on running the generator why not just use your tractor. Running it a pto speed will not hurt it. Remember that these engine do run gen sets and reefers and they run 10-15000 hrs before they are retired.

this is all good info.. guys thanks... Ill keep researching but i may end up with a stand alone gen. why put the hours on the tractor...

It's not just hours on your tractor but it's adding hours to things like oil changes. If you run your tractor for 100 hours (four days straight) then 1/4 of the life of your hydraulic oil and filter have been used up for nothing.

That's what it is for. It is paid for. Probably makes more power than most standby's. Is more efficient. But, the standby will probably be easier to use. (I have a 14hp 10K/8K gasoline stand-by). Philip.

Good point! Guess one could always add that to the OCI (500 hours instead of 400 hours). For me anyway, I only do about a 100 hours a year, so not big deal. Philip.

I have this Generator http://www.northerntool.com

I run it off my L260 which has a four speed PTO. I have the PTO in third gear and the tractor runs slightly over idle speed. It runs my whole house and never bogs the engine, even when the well pump kicks on.

If I put the PTO in fourth gear, the engine will run very slow, but will bog under load. :(

This is the only reason I've kept the OLD beast... :drink: It will run about 14 hours on five gallons of fuel. My BX24 would have to be turning high RPM's and would be nowhere near as efficient!

I have this Generator

QUOTE]

I could not get link to open, probably my computer. What kw is this unit and hp required at full load?

One thing to keep in mind. Our old house was gas heat/range/water heater. We could run that whole house plus christmas lights with our 10K/8K gasoline generator.

Our new house, 100% electric. We are not running this whole house with our 10K/8K gasoline generator.

Philip

Still will have to think about it... I rarely use a generator for anything else.. and we rarley loose power but if we do it could be some time before we get it back.. I just want to be able to run the well. maybe the frig.. and a few lights... I heat with wood in the winter so the furnace would not be running...
Im not looking to have everything going at once either... I just hate having a big stand alone unit when I could have this ready to hook to the tractor in the tractor shed... Hmmm and leave the tractor under cover while doing it... tough call...

Please explain how running a tractor , standing still to run a PTO generator for 100 hrs. or more would have any effect on the hydraulic oil and require it to be changed ???? Engine oil...yes....Hydraulic oil not at all, in my view..the hydraulic oil is not being worked at all..the tractor is just sitting...

I agree, but my next hydro change is at 638 hours. Now I must record the hours run only on pto mode only and add to that 638 I have written in my service log. I don't know if anyone uses their HST+ maintenace mider, I don't, but that will be all out of whack now too. Could get confusing. Philip.
