I have had this B2400 for about 5 years and bought it new. I have been having problems with it starting for about the last year. Now it won't start at all. I engage the glow plugs for 8-10 seconds before engaging the starter. It will turn over strong but will not fire up. I have removed the fuel filter and opened the line to flow. Removed the air cleaner and no go.
I can not tell if the fuel pump is working. It doesn't make any sound. I took a multimeter to the fuel pump connector and it seems to have power. I also loosened up one of the three lines above the pump, turned the engine over 5 seconds and no fuel came out.
Does this sound like a bad fuel pump or am I chasing the wrong thing?
Take a look at the Fuel Shutoff Solenoid. That must retract when the ignition is turned on. It is located above the fuel filter and can be easily removed. With it removed, connect it to its wires and turn the key to the Start position. If the little rod does not move then you need a new solenoid.
There was a thread about this about a year ago. I'll go find it. The part is expensive.
I just confirmed that the machnical pump is working. I removed the hose going to the injector head(Bolt with a small hose on one side and a larger hose on the other). As the engine cranks it pumps what looks like once per revolution.
I also removed two of the three metal lines coming out of the injector head(Am I using the right description for this?). When I cank the engine no fuel comes out of either these two.
Just be careful letting fuel squirt out of the pump or injectors. When it is working right it is under very high pressure and can cause very nasty injuries.
Seems to be a bad Solenoid.
The rod doesn't move when the key is turned to run or start. With the solenoid disconnected resisance on the R/B-B wires is .00(no resistance) and from W-B wires gives no reading like a broken wire(infinite resistance?).
Voltage at the connector is 12v on R/B and 9v on W wire.
Thanks for your help PeterKS. /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif
That solenoid should should have two coils (pull and hold) - they rarely fail simultaneously. So, if the solenoid is not engaging when the key is turned on, the pull coil is not working. Just pull the rod back by hand, hit the starter, and release the rod when it fires.....it should keep running. Good luck!
P.S. There is a spec for the solenoid resistance (I just can't recall it right now). When I'm in the shop this evening, I'll try to remember to look it up and post it.
(1) Try to manually hold the solenoid rod to the "run" position to see if the tractor will start.
(2) Check fuses. If you're not getting power to the solenoid it won't work.
I saw the same situation where a John Deere 670 wouldn't start. I'm not a great trouble shooter, but for some reason I manually moved the solenoid rod while he was trying to start it and it started right up. When I released the rod, the tractor shut off. We finally found a blown fuse. Seems like he replaced the fuse and it's worked fine every since.
glad u got it fixed.$125 seems high for a soleonid, but i never priced one. besides a tractor that won't start is not much good, so i guess$125 ain't to bad. /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif
