Ding! B2400 gets the cupie doll. I opened the fuel cap and it went pffooon as I cracked it open. Never noticed that before. So those hoses going from the filter, pump, etc. up into the firewall just vent back into the upper part of the tank. Nothing fancy. I think a slight vacuum is intended to help bleed any air in the fuel line, but in this case it was too much.

So I took a look at the cap, and I can't determine how it EVER could have vented. I mean, this isn't complex or anything. But the cap has a fancy gasket with several concentric circles making for a lengthy path for air to get from the center hole to the outer edge. But from there, the gasket makes a tight, continuous seal with the tank. I don't see any pinholes or gaps to let air in from outside. Maybe as a zealous newbie I am just screwing it down too tight, and it is supposed to leak slightly around the lip. Seems strange to me.

Anyway, it starts fine now. I am sure that I can make it vent better one way or the other.

The fuel was not sitting long, and it ran fine as received. But as the tank was about half full, there was a big air space. When I refilled, it was all the way full, so very little air space. The vacuum condition showed up after that.

Yes, I did change the engine oil/filter first thing. I will change the hydro oil as soon as I can find Super UDT, or something close enough. The local Kubota dealer doesn't carry it. /forums/images/graemlins/smirk.gifThe dipstick looks clear as can be at the moment, so it might have been done; ie I see that the hydro filter is not the OEM gray color anymore. (Been reading the oil forum on all that.) The Kuobta owners in the area don't bother with it, and just use the generic "tractor fluid" from the auto stores. We don't have very cold or very hot conditions, so maybe they get away with it. But I will stick with the recommended.
