Hi,

Turns out the odd sound I was/am hearing is coming from the plastic shroud that covers the front driveshaft.

I wonder if somehow I caused the damage, or if it is a common problem and would therefore be a warrenty issue.

My tractor has 80 hours on it and is a bit over a month old.

The shroud has a hole [about 0.5 inch in diameter] on the side, in the top half, and some of the plastic is pulled inside. I stuck a screwdriver inside and bent the deformed plastic out...the shroud is also cracked a bit...

Anyone else have this problem with the plastic shroud?

Anyone know how to preplace it? Is it two pieces that are glued together when installed? With the front loader on it looks like it would be a real pain to get on if it were one piece of plastic.

Thanks for any help.

My 2910 with 175 hours does not have any damage to the PTO shaft cover.

The Work Shop Manual has these instructions for disconnecting propeller shaft.

1. Loosen the clamps and slide the propeller shaft cover to the rear.
2. Tap out the spring pin and slide the coupling to the rear.

I looked at my tractor. I only see a clamp on the rear end of cover. The FEL frame does cut down on the clearance. Hope you do not need to remove it to replace cover.
The cover is 4 pieces. Hope the cover between front axle and middle U-joint is the one you have a hole in. The other parts are up in the frame and attach to the transmission.

Front Cover part # is 6C070-5766.

You may want to put some duct tape over the hole until you get a chance to make repairs. This should keep dirt out of the spline shaft.

Re: B2910 driveshaft plastic shroud damage common?

Ron,

Thanks for the input. I guess I better get one of those shop manuals...

Here are a couple shots of the damaged cover...

The little hole that shows in the close up was all that was evident when I first looked. But some plastic was folded in and I had to pry it out with a screwdriver.

The thing that bothers me is that the damage is on the top, rather than bottom half.

I did get stuck in some mud once...perhaps that caused the cover to be pushed up somehow. That mud was BLACK though, and not the brown color of the dust I have been making over the last couple weeks.

attached is the overview, with the closeup to follow...

Can't tell from your picture, does the subframe from your backhoe touch the cover? If not I'm suprized it didn't protct it better.

The plastic shroud does not touch the subframe. It is actually about an inch away I think.

That puzzles me too...The damage seems to originate on the top, rather than the bottom, and the whole thing is pretty well protected. BUT, I was deep in muc once so MAYBE the mud got up there and pushed on the plastic cover...

Just don't know...hard to cry too loudly about this as I might have caused it myself. Then again, maybe I didn't....

The picture looks like the middle U-Joint has been hitting cover. I would ask your dealer to cover it under warranty. It may have off to one side when built causing it to wear through.

To properly see what is needed to repair a KUBOTA tractor you will need a Work Shop Manual and an Illustrated Parts List. It will cost over $100 for the pair. /w3tcompact/icons/eyes.gif

Re: B2910 driveshaft plastic shroud damage common?

Hi,

Took my laptop to the dealer's today and showed the owner the close up picture.

Talked to the mechanic before the dealer got back and when he saw the picture he figured it would be a warrenty repair. The owner I guess said the same thing.

The mechanic also mentioned hearing a sound that could be related to this cover at times. He also thought he may have seen a service bulletin on it, but could not find it.

I will report back after the repair is done. Not sure how soon that will be as I still want to use the tractor while the weather is good. But I will probably buy a box blade from this dealer, and if I do I will try to combine the repair and the delivery so they can save a trip.

Sounds to me like this shroud damage problem may be more common than we realize. I put a fair number of hours on my tractor the first month [about 60, now have 93 in about seven weeks] and so the problem appeared quickly. Other wise it may not have appeared until next spring! By then warrenty may have be debated more.
