Has anyone ever removed/rebuilt the front axle on a B2910?
3 or 4 weeks ago, I was coming back from the neighbors house with a load of firewood in the loader. I was on a gravel road, 4WD/Hi Range, and driving only abour 3 MPH. Suddenly I heard a loud noise, and the front axle locked up hard enough to kill the engine, as I skidded to a sudden stop. I restarted the engine, and got it into 2WD,and was able to rock it back and forth enough to free the front wheels. I got it home, and tried 4WD, and it seemed to work, but seemed a bit noisy. I drained the Super UDT out of the axle, and there was some minute bits of "silver" in the oil. I have a suspicion that there is a broken gear tooth somewhere in the front drive train.
The 400 hr maintainance says to check the front axle pivot and adjust for about 15 ft.lbs. It was looser than a goose and flopped around freely...after torqueing it, the pivot action was much tighter. I then refilled with Super UDT, and have been using the tractor sparingly since.
I ordered a Kubota shop manual, and looked the procedure over, and it seems like I might be able to do this myself...rather than let the dealer have it for weeks, and get a bill for $1000. I have virtually every tool that should be required, and have been working on my cars, mowers, etc., for decades.
If anyone has been into one of these, I would appreciate any tips, or tricks or traps to watch for. Also, anyone have any thoughts about using Super UDT, vs. 80/90 wt. gear oil in the front axle....the owners manual says either is ok.
