B2910 Position Control

I set my 60" MMM up according to the manual to mow at 2.5". According to manual you should set your position control lock where the lower 3-pt. links are level with the ground - to avoid all the extra lifting range of the 3-pt. prior to actually lifting the deck. This puts me at about #4 on the position control range. Therefore my lifting range is from 4-8; which isn't much. My question is: Is there a way (through linkage adjustment or something) to gain more range of motion? I hope this makes sense. Thanks in advance.

This has been talked about before and I think the short answer is NO. It sounds like your range is about the same as mine and from what I have heard about the same as others. I never have figured out why so many position settings when only part of them do anything.

Thanks, Mark. I had a feeling that would be the case. I couldn't see any way of adding more range of motion with the linkages - but, thought maybe I might be missing something.

I guess I didn't read my MMM manual well enough/w3tcompact/icons/blush.gif. I don't recall seeing it say that about where to set the position control. Can you give me the page number so I can read that section without re-reading the whole manual? I do rememeber it saying that the deck was not designed to hang from the lift assembly during mowing, but that it should ride on the wheels/casters (i.e NOT a floating deck design). I took this to mean that I should fully lower it (position control 1), adjust the height on the wheels to what I'd like, and go mow. I also remember that I needed to adjust the linkage so that in fully raised position, it aligned with the deck hanging brackets (used for hanging the mower deck without removing it, while using the 3ph for something else), but did not bind upward against the bracket.

Oh - BTW, I do use the 3ph to raise and lower the deck while mowing if there is some reason I want it higher (like a rock or a bump I don't want to scalp). It doesn't seem to do any damage or be a problem at all.

Sorry I didn't get back to you right away. I've been too busy putting the new tractor through the paces.

The position control lock discussion is on page 21 of the MMM manual. Basically, it prevents the lower lift arms from dropping all the way down, then you would have all that unnecessary lift range - prior to actually lifting the deck. Setting the position control lock, allows for immediate lift of the deck. Hope that helps.

Can you think of any problem (other than performance) with lowering position control all of the way to 1? Is anything in the linkage getting over used, or is there excess stress anywhere? I guess if there is no other damage happening, I can wait for the deck to begin to raise, since I'm used to this on my other implements also (like the rake and boxblade).

No, I don't see any problem letting it lower all the way. It will just take an extra second for the deck to lift - while the lower 3-pt. arms are coming up. The only other thing I could see is that you will have less ground clearance, at the rear, with the lift arms all the way down. No big deal. I kind of like having the "immediate" deck lift - in the event of a problem while mowing - catching a root or something like that. So far, so good - the deck seems to just glide over roots, humps, etc. in my yard. It does a very good job - almost as good as my Simplicity. /w3tcompact/icons/wink.gif

You might want to check if the drive shaft will slide apart or the overlap of the drive shaft is long enough to support the power running thought it. If you ran your tractor across a ditch the mower could drop very low and the drive shaft might slide appart. I believe this could happen on some tractors I have seen. This could make a real mess down there!
