Hi,

Recently I noticed a funny sound that seems related to tractor movement. It remeinds me of something that would be coming from the universal joints in the drivetrain, but I hear it in 4wd or 2wd.

The sound increases in frequency with speed. After things are warmed up and I am using the tractor I forget about it or it goes away, I am not sure.

This in not the whine of the HST. What I am hearing is strange...not a Pop, pop, pop...kind of like the sound you can make with your mouth if you hold you lips closed then open your mouth while trying to keep your lips in a circular shape...how's that for a description??? /w3tcompact/icons/laugh.gif

Not sure if any of this makes sense or not. 65 hours on the tractor in the first five weeks...all is well...just wondering about this strange sound...

Grateful for any input on this...in the meantime, I will use the tractor and consider this sound normal...

I can't remember if your backhoe came with the PTO pump or if it was plumbed direct. But on my older Kubota hoe the PTO pump made that sort of sound, and it smoothed out as the RPM increased. Just a thought.

Whoops!

Forgot to mention that my backhoe has a sepreate PTO driven pump, and that the sound is still there with the PTO disengaged.

Thanks for bringing that up, Kodiak!

Check to be sure your wheel lug nuts/bolts are tight.

Like Hayden said, check your lugs. I Had the same thing happen on my b7500. It was not the lug nuts but the bolt and shims(unkown of proper term) that holds the rear wheel at one of the variable spacings. Don't know if your 2910 is set up for spacing. My 2710 is not the same as the 7500. Hope this helps.

I will check the lug nuts...the wheel spacing is not adjustable on the B2910...

The frequency of the sound is much faster than the turn of the rear wheels, and the sound seems to come more from the center of the tractor than the rear. I would say ten of those "whop" sounds for about a foot of tractor travel in low range.

I don't think the sound is there after using the tractor for a while doing backhoe/loader stuff.

Raining finally here in Pgh today so I may not get a chance to listen for that sound again until tomorrow.

Thanks for the advice!

The front drive shaft is covered by a plastic shroud. Sometimes, especially with a loader attatched, the shroud gets out of position and the drive shaft universal joint will hit the shroud from the inside. You will hear it in 4 or 2 wheel drive due to the fact that the front drive shaft will turn as long as the front wheels are turning.

Checked today...lug nuts are tight. Drive shaft cover seemed tight and normal in placement.

The sound was not there. Not from the beginning or anytime during the day. I guess I ran the tractor for about 4 hours...maybe five.

So it is a mystery to me. I remember someone here once saying that they heard different sounds at different times...must be happening to me too!

If it comes back I will turn the tractor off, set the parking brake and crawl under and see if something is hitting the drive shaft...

Case closed? Guess not...time will tell.

Heard that sound again today, not as loud, but it was there.

Got under the tractor and took a good look. This time I noticed that the top of the plastic shroud that covers the front driveshaft was poked in. Or perhaps pulled on by the u-joint, if that is what is in there.

I took a screwdriver and pried it back out...not sure how this will work though. I think I heard the sound comeback later in the afternoon...

Not sure if I somehow got a stick up in there or if the U-joint just rubbed from the beginning and somehow grabbed the plastic and pulled it in...

I am almost 100% sure that this shroud was the source of the sound all along.

Kubmech, you called it!
