Does anyone have the instructions on how to remove/add shims to injector pump to adjust the timing? My B3200 smokes like crazy when it starts up. From what I've read on the forum adjusting the timing on the injector pump fixes it. I tried the dealers in the area to see if it could be done under warranty - no luck. One dealer acted like he never heard of the problem, another simply accused my of rolling the tractor over and causing the problem. Rather than put up with those azzhats, I'll fix it myself. But...I don't know where the shims are located and how many to remove (or is it add?).

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

It's covered in the Workshop Manual for both my L39 and L45.

Do you have the WSM for your machine? If you plan to do maintenance and repairs I highly suggest you pick one up.

I've been wondering about what fuel timing spec is actually given in the B3200 WSM. Is it the Japanese "build" spec that should reduce vibration and smoke on start up (which many posters believe is the same as the spec given in the B7800 WSM) or is it the US tier 4 interim emissions spec (aka the same thing the tractor is already set to when delivered in the US)?

To put it another way, will (re)setting the fuel timing to the B3200 WSM spec actually correct anything?

It may not be so much the actual setting as the procedure that he's looking for.

I'm not sure what is in the manual honestly, but it would be easy to verify.

I can tell you this: the specification in my L45 manual (~3 years old) is 2.5 degrees retarded compared to that in my L39 manual (~9 years old).

Different models. Neither is tier IV to my knowledge.

If you do a search om timing or cold star for the B3200 you will find more, but this is what I found. I haven't done this yet but most likely will soon adn the FEL is turning black on the exhaust side from the smoke.

This is copied from a post I found a couple weeks ago, I didn't do the write up:

Its easy to do. 1st. Remove the aircleaner ***. 2 remove the air intake manifold. 3 disconect all 4 injector lines from the pump and the injectors. 4 remove the stop seliond on the side of the injection pump( turn key on while doing this it disengages it) 5 remove the 6 bolts that hold the pump on. 7 remove side cover on injection pump to release governer spring ( watch how u unhook it so when u put the pump back down u hook it up right) 8 pull pump out remove shims leave only one with 3 holes on corner. Then reasemble in reverse order. The b3200 does not have to be bled just keep cranking till it fires on its own. The way u check your timing is by doing a spill test. With injection lines off turn engine over by hand till diesel spills out of #1 port on pump ( closest to the rad) there is a plug bottom right behind the hydrulic couplers remove it and look at the markings that tells were your timing is now at. I think i got everything. Good luck its not hard to do.

I'm not convinced that is a good idea. The pump is shimmed at the factory to SET the injection timing. It is possible and realistic that each tractor has a different set of shims. Simply removing all but 1 might result in different injector timing from machine to machine.

It would be better to determine your current injection timing, determine what you want to change it to, and then subtract shimming to attain the goal.

Your picture shows snow. Are we talking about very cold weather starts? I have no heat in my shed and so I have to use lots of glow plug. I can see where one would not want to smoke up a garage or workshop, I just use the smoke to let any critters living in my shed know, its time to find a new home. Having two other tractors, my B3200 is by far the lesser smoker.

i would add to that instruction sheet "take picture" before each step of disassembly
