B6000 Dynamo question

   / B6000 Dynamo question #11
Michael,

The B6000 has no water pump. It uses a process Kubota called (I think) Thermo Siphon. Which is nothing more than convection cooling in a closed loop system. It does work quite well in the B6000 as long as you keep the radiator clean.

So what I am getting at is you can use any dynamo / alternator that will bolt up. Cooling / water pump is not an issue here. If you need someone to help trouble shoot your problem, I do have a reasonably strong background in electronics and would be happy to help.

hi gary.

i hear you loud and clear; i can only go on what the dealer is telling me.

what is the "thing" behing the dynamo in this kub parts diagram ?

and yes, to your question, the shop guys at the dlr have probably never seen this tractor before - i'm sure it's been quite the talk down there.

thanks,

Michael,
#13 looks like the dynamo, #14 looks like it might be the gasket. Hard to tell from that pic. I think somewhere I may still have the manual in PDF form. If not, I can get it from the guy I sold my B6000 from.

As someone else mentioned, it is hard to believe the magnets have "failed". But lets assume they have fallen off , (highly unlikely) then the only use of the dynamo assembly is to keep the fan working to keep air moving through the radiator. Then you just need to keep the battery charged. An external alternator / charger will work.

But I can assure you the B6000 has no water pump, so that should NOT be an issue. You can easily make this little tractor do what you need to do knowing you have the PTO reverser!

You can go to your local NAPA dealer and get the biggest battery that will fit ( can get you the # of the one I used), get a good charger and it will get you through the winter. Mounting an alternator will work, but I have to believe as long as the dyno has good magnets and a good armature (mine was shot), you can make yours work.

Not sure what dealer you are going to but my guess is they have not worked on many B6000's.

Hope this is of some help,

Gary

That looks like the gooseneck to me, not a water pump.

alright cleve, i'll buy that. kubota refers to the gasket, 14, as packing. the shop used the term water pump, but i just don't think that they are familiar with this tractor. i called kubota yesterday and they are telling me that this dynamo is unique because of the gooseneck and the fact that the dynamo mounts to it. $460. for a dynamo. wallingfords in auburn, where the tractor is, told me that the rectifier was fine. dynamo is not charging battery. i couldn't start the tractor without jumping it from my truck.

i found this post the other day:

I am working on a B6000. My dynamo seems to be not charging enough. I have been told that when testing you should have 43 volts between the brown & white wires and have 30.8 volts between the brown & yellow wires. I am only showing 20 volts on both tests. Does this mean I have to replace the dynamo or should I also have something else checked before I replace it. Dealer wants around $460 for a new one.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

i contacted wengers in pa and made a formal request for them to find a used dynamo. if that doesn't work i am going to bring the tractor back home and try to keep the battery on a charger all the time and hope it starts when the temp drops. they are telling me that by the time they fabricate and weld a mounting bracket, etc., in order to put an alternator on the thing, i could be looking at 300.

hope wengers can find something.

thanks for the reply.

What size is your engine? My B7100 has a D750 16 HP.

I am looking at the parts diagram for my dynamo and it is different than yours. The part number for my dynamo is 15261-64010 or 15372-64010, depending on serial number.

OK let me add my two cents worth, I have a B7100 but figure the Dynamo are similar to each other, my parts manual shows component parts for the dynamo so why buy the whole thing ? If the output is low why not take the stator to a alt/gen and starter repair shop and have it re-wound ? Would have to be cheaper than what has been quoted. This is not a complex item, just one moving part the rotor which has the magnets spinning around the stator producing AC voltage that the regulator converts back to DC. Knock on wood mine works fine never a problem with it keeping the battery up even with a extra rear work light installed and larger bulbs in the headlights.Hope this adds some ideas on how to repair the dynamo....

It's a ZL600, 2 cyl, 12.5 HP.

Michael;

The B6000 is a tough little tractor. Plus, you scored a big win with the PTO reverser. I concur with keeping the battery charged...you can run it that way indefinitely, buying yourself time to find a solution...or not. Mine didn't particularly want to start in winter without using the decomp knob...and that was in Virginia. Manual says use 10W30 oil below 32 degrees (SAE20 for 32-77 degrees).

so close, yet so.....

wengers called this morning to let me know they found a dynamo - for 300. schmackeroos. ouch, hate getting my hopes up like that.

when i was told that the dynamo was bad, the first question i asked was - can't it be taken to an alternator shop and be re-built ? i was told that they couldn't find magnets to fit it. i also asked the kubota parts people if magnets could be bought separately for it - no. believe me, i have tried every angle.

the part no. is 15231-6401-2

hard to believe such a simple little thing could cost 460. bucks.

it's a white thanksgiving here in maine !

hope everyone has a happy holiday.

Well, I can't help you out but this is the best story I've read on TBN in a long time and I'm pulling for you and your little B6000. Sounds like you're finally getting things lined up and just need to get past this hurdle. Good luck and keep us posted.

Also, post pics of your new tractor. I think those little old 4wd Kubotas are cool!
