I need to remove the PTO drive shaft from the rear to replace the gear that turns the PTO shaft. Do I need to remove one of the side rear axle covers to complete this task. Thanks for any advice/comments! SB
No, you don't have to do that. You do have to remove the PTO shield and the bracket that holds the three point hitch bar. The bolts on the face of the PTO cover plate cannot be gotten to without these removed. Be very careful not to crack that plate, it's made from cast iron and and almost impossible to find a replacement for. Once the cover is removed the shaft comes right out with the cover and bearings along with the top gear. I replaced mine this past fall on a B7100 which has the same features as yours. It was pretty easy actually once I took off all the things in the way. Don't forget to have a big bucket to drain off the trany oil. I did not have a new gasket for the cover so I used silicon and that worked just fine. You will probably tear the round gasket around the PTO shaft so it would be good to replace it anyway as well as all the bearings while your in there. Hopefully it's the top gear that went bad like mine, the bottom one is harder to get out and you can't get a gear puller on it. They tell me the whole gear and shaft comes out but, it's hard to get a grip on it in that small area.
Scott, thanks for the tips! I have to replace both gears and a bearing, plus it broke the rear cast pto cover in the process. The lower gear was just held in with a snap ring and slid off with hardly any persuasion. Thanks again! SB
Wow, lots of damage. Just out of curiosity how did you find the gears and cover plate? I was lucky to find the upper gear at another dealer than the one around here and that's all I needed really. I'm still waiting for it to come in, going on four months now, back ordered they say.I'll take it just for a spare if it ever shows up. Their parts web site says the cover plate is no longer available.
Scott,
I ordered all the parts at the local (Houston) Kubota dealer, including the cover. The parts took about a week to arrive at the dealer and total cost was under $200. SB
