Hi Bird
Guess everything is relative. The Owners Manual on my Massey, which I think is typical, assumed that you knew a lot about tractors and was very brief. The M Series Kubota manuals on the other hand show excellent illustrations and tell you how to do almost anything that you would want to do.
The Massey service manual (not written by Massey) is much smaller than the Kubota operators manual, and it leaves a lot to the imigination and that combined with the fact that it covers about a dozen models and seldom describes but one of them was frustrating. The one I best remember is the one that said remove the pin from the front axle. Six hours later with a sledge and using a trailer ball, I removed it! /w3tcompact/icons/smile.gif. The other one was to replace the gasket on the oil pan, it said to remove the oil pan. Of course they inferred you knew to remove the tires, radiator, front axle, front casting, associated sheet metal and THEN remove the oil pan! /w3tcompact/icons/smile.gif .
I just received the shop manual on the M6800S. The retail cost was $65. Unfortunately it required a supplement (looks like about 20 pages) for the new S version and it was another $45.00. The good news is that they are also well illustrated manuals with a lot of detail that allow you to do the maintenance without being in the tractor repair business. Most repairs on tractors are pretty easy if you have done it before or have a pretty good set of manuals.
They are typical Japanese with correct statements like "dissasemble parts in a clean place to prevent confusion later."
The special parts section shows and describes every special tool that they use. Another interesting portion is for tools that are not available a description of how to make them is provided.
My auto manuals usually refer to a special tool by name and you can't buy one of find out what it would look like if you could make one! /w3tcompact/icons/smile.gif
Another part shows the attention to detail. For testing the battery, it has a table of specific gravity vs the amount of charge in the battery.
