Hi Bird

Guess everything is relative. The Owners Manual on my Massey, which I think is typical, assumed that you knew a lot about tractors and was very brief. The M Series Kubota manuals on the other hand show excellent illustrations and tell you how to do almost anything that you would want to do.

The Massey service manual (not written by Massey) is much smaller than the Kubota operators manual, and it leaves a lot to the imigination and that combined with the fact that it covers about a dozen models and seldom describes but one of them was frustrating. The one I best remember is the one that said remove the pin from the front axle. Six hours later with a sledge and using a trailer ball, I removed it! /w3tcompact/icons/smile.gif. The other one was to replace the gasket on the oil pan, it said to remove the oil pan. Of course they inferred you knew to remove the tires, radiator, front axle, front casting, associated sheet metal and THEN remove the oil pan! /w3tcompact/icons/smile.gif .

I just received the shop manual on the M6800S. The retail cost was $65. Unfortunately it required a supplement (looks like about 20 pages) for the new S version and it was another $45.00. The good news is that they are also well illustrated manuals with a lot of detail that allow you to do the maintenance without being in the tractor repair business. Most repairs on tractors are pretty easy if you have done it before or have a pretty good set of manuals.

They are typical Japanese with correct statements like "dissasemble parts in a clean place to prevent confusion later."

The special parts section shows and describes every special tool that they use. Another interesting portion is for tools that are not available a description of how to make them is provided.

My auto manuals usually refer to a special tool by name and you can't buy one of find out what it would look like if you could make one! /w3tcompact/icons/smile.gif

Another part shows the attention to detail. For testing the battery, it has a table of specific gravity vs the amount of charge in the battery.

Wen (and Mark), makes me wonder if the manual is so limited for my B2710 because it was the first year for this model. I know when I bought a new 1988 Chev. pickup, I was amazed when the shop manual was 4 separate books, and they weren't bad, but not as good as I had expected, then when I bought a 1989 and got the manuals, there were only two, but they were better than the 4 for the 1988 models.

Bird,

Also don't forget the PARTS manuals that Kubota has in addition to the Work Shop Manuals. Mine hasn't arrived yet, but it is absolutely wonderful to have a complete Illustrated Parts Breakdown at your fingertips for your Tractor. When you can't figure out which side the spring that flew across the room was on, there is a picture of it in the correct position. /w3tcompact/icons/smile.gif

With my Massey, they could USUALLY get the right part about the 2nd or 3rd time they ordered it! /w3tcompact/icons/smile.gif

Oh yeah, Wen, I got the shop manual ($88) and the parts manual ($48) at the same time from Carver. And at least on the 1999 B2710, you really need both.

Bird, that could be the problem. How long have you had your tractor now? If you've had it a while, it would be interesting to see if there's a newer, better manual for it. If so, tell 'em you want an update to the second edition!

Mark, I hadn't thought about checking for any updates. I got the tractor Aug. 12 (be 10 months old tomorrow).

Oh, I forgot to mention that the Kubota Binder for the manuals is $7.00. /w3tcompact/icons/smile.gif And you thought when you ordered a 3 hole punched manual, it came with a binder included? /w3tcompact/icons/smile.gif

Wen, when I ordered the manuals, I had no idea they were 3 hole punched until they arrived. So, I don't have an "official" Kubota binder, but Wal-Mart had a pretty nice one of the right size./w3tcompact/icons/laugh.gif

Bird,

I think I am becoming more interested in that 300 ft pound torque wrench after ejb had that problem with his lug bolts. Bet he is right that they didn't ever torque them down, but getting them to do anything about it may be hard.

I'm going to be very interested in the outcome. I figure it depends entirely on the dealer. If he thinks the problem was one of a mistake on the part of one of his employees, and he wants to keep good customer relations, then he'll fix it. And of course, he may have liability insurance that will cover the cost to him.
