B7200 HST Transmission shot-replaceable by novice?

My first question would be if you tried new filters, fluid, and cleaned all the strainers?

If you have not, I would at least try that before going to the effort to split the tractor.

I agree - I can not tell you how many times I looked for the hardest solution whenever it turned out to be really EZ. How many hours are on it and are you the original owner who took good care of it?

Yes, been through that. I had just purchased a 3 pt. backhoe for my tractor. When I brought it to the dealership for the hookup, they noticed that the hydraulics did not have much power. My loader was not able to lift up the front of the tractor, which they said it should be able to, and it had no digging ability. They first went through and cleaned the strainers, and the fluids, but to no avail. They then checked the pressure for the hydraulic pump, and they said it was about 900lbs. When they opened up the relief valve to check on things, there was a "split lock washer" in there for a shim, causing the spring to bind or stay tilted. They reshimmed it and pressure is up to where it should be. I think the said about 1750lbs. Anyways the hydraulics were like brand new. I can now pick up the front of the tractor at idle, where before w/o ballast on the back, it could not happen. When I brought the tractor home, w/ the backhoe on, it was then that I started to notice the transmission issues. I used the backhoe for some drainage issues, and that worked great, but my tractory appeared to have issues driving around, but I chalked it up to the added weight of the backhoe. But after I took off the backhoe, the driving issues were still there. And that is how I am where I am, w/ HST issues. I do plan on pulling the strainers, tomorrow, just to check on them, hoping that maybe something circulated around the system, w/ the increased pressure, that may be plugging them, BUT I am not optimistic. I figure that the tractor is 26 yrs old('84), I've owned since '07, hour meter reads 311, which I assume it has gone around at least once.

Interesting. Another field repair gone awry.....

Since you had the machine in to the mechanic, I assumed that the fluid
and filter issues had been checked.

Now, you have to do the HST field test as suggested by Brian: put the FEL
against a tree and try to go forward, watching the PTO shaft. Listen
for the HST relief valve to open.

That is one thing I wish my B8200 would have had, at least a 10,000 hour meter. I got it used with 425 hours on it; the dealer indicated it was true hours. I sold it with a little over 250 hours showing. So I believe it had 1250 total. But, there is no way to know. It's general condition when I bought it seemed reasonable for 425 hours.

Well cleaned the strainers, to no avail. The fluid is less than a week old along w/ the filter. Tried to go up a set of car ramps(tried is the key word as it did not happen) in high, while watching the shaft coming from the engine, and it kept spinning w/o slowing. Just a lot of whine from the pump. All that is left is to wait for the parts to come in. Funny thing, I was going to paint the body panels while I had it disassembled, and when I went to my neighborhood TSC, they have no Kubota Orange Paint. Apparently all the stores have a "stop sale" on the paint and it is going back to the warehouse. No Further Info available. Typical for me right now is that it is the only color that is going back. Trying to avoid the $12.00 that a dealer wants per can. Gotta love it.

For paint check out an auto supply store that stocks paint. Some of them can mix paint and put it in spray cans.:D

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

MY B7200 is now experiencing issues moving. Loader hydraulics are fine, will pick the front of the tractor up at idle with the B1640 loader. Can't get up the smallest inclines in high, especially after it is warmed up. I took it to my local dealer and pressure tested the transmission. The charge pump was good at 80lbs at half throttle. The forward direction port was only hitting 1800lbs upon initial forward momentum, and then dropping down to about 1000 while moving on level ground. Should be about 3800lbs I was told. We switched the reverse and forward relief valves w/ the same outcome. Anways, I've been told, I need a new tranny, as I guess, the most likely issue is that the internals are not sealing against some plate and maintaining a tight seal to build pressure.
I'm not anxious to pay the dealer's hourly shop rate, to swap the tranny's, and I am contemplating doing it myself. They were quoting me about three days of labor. I do have a good mechanical ability(I believe anyways), just wondering if this is doable w/ that, or if a specialist/knowledgeable person is actually necessary. I am a novice to hydraulics through. Assuming it to be pretty cut and dry as far as unbolting and separating and putting back together.
Does anybody know if I have to separate from the clutch area back or does it come out from the back, keeping the main frame area attached to the front of the tractor?
I just am not in the market right now for a newer tractor.
Any words of encouragement or advice? Thanks in advance,
Rick
