Tractor
Craftman 17hp 42" cut lawn tractor
Hi everyone. I am new and looking at different tractors and options. I have seen a B7200 at a local dealer and i have a few questions, it looks kinda old but not like an 8n old.
Will i be able to get parts for this?
Is this model a problem one?
How hard is it to work on?
Will i be able to get a loader for it, if so what one fits?
I dont think it has power stearing?
Is power stearing a big factor with a loader?
Any clue on how much tires for it cost?
What size impliments will it handle, brush mower, blade, box blade, tiller?
Any thing else i should know about this model?

Thanks.

LIONS: I think the tractor was built in 83' with 17 hp. 2/4wd with gear trans. only. Parts for the engine and drive train should be available through tractorsmart.com; you may want to checkout their site. Unless you are mechanically inclined, I would shy away from buying a project that already needs work? The loader may require a tractor wrecking yard, but there is a dealership in the Pacific Northwest that will custom build a loader for any tractor. Trying to locate a loader may cost more than the value of the tractor? That will require a search, maybe on this board? You may want to give the guys here your needs, size of property, and etc; and dollars you will dole out for your future tractor. I would look for the complete package, and the condition is more important than age of the tractor. Kubota has been here for nearly 35 years.

LIONS: Type in tractorhouse.com, and look for tractors under 40 hp. Then the list should appear with all the makes. These tractors are sold on consignment all over the U.S., and should give you a bench mark for price, hours, and condition. Photos are also included on most of them. Good luck!

I almost bought a B7400 w/fel. didn't for a couple reasons.
1. ground clearance, rough, rocky woody area
2. power steering, with a loaded bucket in rough terrain , well theres nothing wrong with excercise...uhem just not as young as once I was.

Oh yeah one more reason .. weight. I wanted to add a backhoe.

The Kubota dealer will be able to supply parts. Check with them. It only takes one phone call. Satisfy your curiosity so no guessing is involved.

Adding a loader should be no problem. It may take a few modifications for brackets but nothing unreasonable.

Power steering may be a negative factor when doing loader work.

For tire cost's call a tire dealer like Goodyear. Different types of tires may have a different price. The present rims may limit you to one specific type of tire.:D

The 7200 is a stout little tractor. If it's the 7200Dt it's gear drive, three speeds with two ranges, diff lock, manual steering. Power steering was an option but not an easy one to install. About 4gpm hydraulic system. Weak point is the bushing in which the transmission shaft rides in the engine, needs to be replaced every thousand hours or so, and requires splitting the tractor. My local dealer had everything in stock for the job, including a new clutch, throwout bearing, etc. for under $100. Can't beat that. It'll take a loader, almost any small one can be modified to fit it. Power steering would certainly be nice, but is not necessary with the loader, particularly if it's 4wd. The front wheels kind of pull the tires around in 4wd which makes it easier to turn (if you're moving). I ran a 4' bush hog, 5' rear blade, boom pole, 5' tiller, and a 5' finish mower. Adequate power for everything except the bh when I got into tall thick grass. How much tires cost depends on what set of tires it has now; there aren't a lot of choices available for the turf tires (31x13.5-15) and if you want to change over to ags the rims are too wide. That said, it only weighs about 1200# and with the turf tires it barely knocked the grass over compared to the damage I do with my 8200 with ags.

I owned a new B7200 in the late nineties and loved it--regret selling it.

This time I will get a suspended MMM since the rear mower tended to scrape the (wet) oregon ground on quick turns.

I had a B7300 4WD w/loader... no power steering. I never had a problem with it... even with a load in the bucket it wasn't bad. There are a lot of places you can price tires.... but you need to know what size to do so. Parts shouldn't be a problem... neither should getting a loader. Like somebody else mentioned though... the price of a new loader might not be justifiable. Keep the implements small... ones made for "sub-compacts" would be fine.

Good luck.

I had a B-7200 and ended up selling it to my brother. I wanted a loader and it was going to cost more than I was willing to put into a used smaller tractor as opposed to getting a new B-7800 (a little bigger with hydro, loader). They offered me $3,000 for the B-7200 on trade to the B-7800, so I offered it to my brother and he jumped on it. I think the loader for it was going to be around $3,000 to $4,000 for a new one.
If it is a gear tractor that bushing the input shaft rides on is a pain. By the time I realized what had happened, it had chewed up the end of the crank. Instead of replacing the crank ($900 just for part), I had a friend press a bearing in the flywheel and cut down the input shaft for it to work. It has worked ever since. (Ronnie at Tractorsmart told me about that inexpensive fix).
The B-7200 is a great tractor, but if I were you I would look for the package deal. One reason is that on my tractor the mid mount mower used the loader holes for mounting and it would have been a mess trying to add a loader which was something I didn't know until I started checking into the loader.
Good luck and take your time and look around.
