Hmm, me thinks you might want to not do what I did. Every time my 12" auger on my Lienbach L7400 bit hard in the ground I broke the stinking 5/16" shear pin. So, I put on a slip clutch. I apparently didn't have the slip clutch adjusted loose enough. I can now tell you that my 5030 will twist the 12" auger you have in half at just above an idle. /forums/images/graemlins/mad.gif

I just got back from buying a better auger. I'd take pictures of the destroyed one, but my temper got the best of me and there isn't much left. /forums/images/graemlins/blush.gif I can tell by the picture that you haven't done the shear bolt drill very often. All of your shields are still on. /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

The L7400 seems to have a decent gear box and all, but that 12" auger isn't just too strong. Maybe with a smaller tractor and staying with the very easy to break shear pins you will be okay. I need to bore around 5000 holes. I was having to replace the shear pin about every 6 to 8 holes. I just didn't feel like changing 800 or so shear pins!! Hopefully after another turn on the clutch nuts and a much heavier 12" auger I'll be okay.

Just a suggestion. Next time you are by a Rural King or a hardware store, pick up a dozen or so 5/16" X 2 1/2" grade 2 bolts and nuts. I quit screwing with the lock washers. They never stayed in long enough to worry with them. Anybody know how this PHD would work if a guy used grade 5 shear bolts? With the grade 2, I can tell you spend more time changing the shear bolts than digging if you have heavy clay soil! If you have rocky soil, don't even try it with the standard 12" auger.

Dargo,

Sorry to hear about your self destructing PHD. Are you sure you couldn't post a couple pics? I have never heard of such a failure.

Thanks for the warning.

KB, when my temper got the best of me, the bottom half of the auger got the front loader treatment. /forums/images/graemlins/blush.gif I then took off the two pieces of the shield that covers where the auger is bolted to the gearbox and took out the two bolts attaching the auger. I then proceeded to give the top half the front loader treatment. (yeah, I was still ticked) I kept the 4 wing nuts, the 4 lock washers for the wing nuts, and the two bolts, nuts and lock washers that hold on the auger. I have to go back to plant trees today and also get the two piece shield that attaches with the wing nuts. I apparently left those on the ground.

The auger (broken and also crushed) found it's way into a dumpster on the way home. It broke right where the one spiral stops about half way or so up the auger shaft. It looked like it twisted and snapped right at the weld there. To be honest about it though, the dealer who sold me the auger did tell me that the actual auger bit was the weakest link in the PHD. He showed me several much more expensive PHD's, and the main difference was in the strength of their auger bit. Oh well, I tried with the lighter bit. I think if you stay with the (designed to be weak) light duty shear bolts, you'll likely be okay. Just keep several around when you start a project.

Killer B,

Regarding the use of the MMM with the BH4672, I asked that very question of the dealer when I purchased it because I do one day plan to mow with the 7610.

They told me that you could mow even with the BH/subframe, he referred to the term "performance matched system" Pretty sure you would want to drop the backhoe to mow due to it's weight and effect it would have on the lawn.

I get by, but my holes are pretty ugly sometimes because when I drop the spinning auger back down it never goes straight back down into the hole so it chews up the sides pretty bad.

My REAL problem is that the little old B6100 doesn't have much lifting power on the 3PH so it's real easy ('specially with my heavy clay soil) to get the auger in too deep. It's not really "screwed into the ground" it's just too heavy for the 3PH to pull it up.

You haven't really had fun with your PHD until you auger into a strata of shale. Hold on tight and be ready to drop the 3 pt fast cuz that auger will just corkscrew towards China and lift your front end skyward. The first time is a real ball tickler /forums/images/graemlins/shocked.gif
