Approaching 50hr oil change and curious about what brand and weight of engine oil others are using in their B series Kubota's. Any information/opinions/results both positive and negative are greatly appreciated.

John,

I use the 10W30 Kubota branded that the dealer sold me for two reasons:

First - waranatee issues, my dealer keeps records of this kind of stuff if the engine ever failed under warantee

second - the price difference wasn't that much. Even if i went to the local auto parts store or Wal-Mart and got oil for $1.50 per quart instead of paying $3 or $4 for the Kubota branded stuff the difference in price was like a $10 bill. Not enough for me to worry about when I paid $19k for the tractor, loader & hoe.

You should do a search here on TBN to find out what else you will need to do at 50hrs, this sight was very helpful to me when I did my 50 hr service. You will learn stuff like even though the manual calls for 4 gallons of Super UDT you should only buy like 3 or 3.5 gal because not all the hydraulic oil will drain out. The HYD screen takes a 26mm or 27mm socket you can purchase at Lowes store - my local Sears store did not carry a socket that big.

Good luck

My dealer recomended Shell Rottela T SAE15W-40 when I bought my tractor. Still using it 6 years later. /forums/images/graemlins/cool.gif

Book with my B3030 says 10W-30....but finding a diesel 10W-30 OTHER than the Kubota stuff is darned near impossible!! At $3.10 a qt from my dealer..I said the heck with that!! AT my first change Im going to Rotella 5W-40 Synthetic...which is a FAR superior oil than Kubota's 10W-30. I can buy it al WalMart for less that $21 for a 5 qt "gallon".

If the Kubota branded oil was even close to a "normal" 10W-30...Id run with it and just buy it a case at a time....but IMHO...its a flat RIP OFF And Im not going that route!

BTW: I DONT use syn oils in ANYTHING else here

Sully2,

You say you are going to use synthetic Rotella T 5w40 in your B3030 but, then you say you don't use synthetics in anything else. Is it just a price issue or some other reason? Just curious.

I run Mobile 1 Delvac 5W-30 in my tractor. I also run this stuff in my Chevy Duramax diesel. It is a bit expensive at $23 gallon but well worth it in my mind. I run the oil in my Duramax 10,000 miles between changes and have oil analysis' done and the oil could go 20,000 if I wanted to do it.

Just my oppinion, however, I think this oil is far superior to any dino based oils.

I dont have any sort of vehicle where SYN motor oils would be benificial. A premium "dino" oil changed on a regular basis works super fine in them all...BUT..for this tractor I CANT FIND a premium oil ( except ?? Kubota's branded oil) thats diesel rated. Hence the change to SYN Rotella-T ..(5W-40) that will cover the problem.

SYN oils are GREAT...if you really need them! If you arent operaing in the parameters where they are NEEDED...then they are a waste of $$. Money has nothing to do with it in either case.

I'll try to fill in for him - we've practically done a "Vulcan Mind Meld" from all the posts of his I've read.

Short version - I wouldn't use 5W-XX in a Kubota, seems to me that's more for automobile engines that have been designed to meet "fleet fuel mileage" requirements. If Kubota says 10W-30, I'd listen.

In cold weather, I don't feel great about 15W-40, dino or otherwise.

For the amount of extra expense involved, I just switched to Amsoil 10W-30 for the better cold starting and an added degree of protection that it provides in the event of a cooling failure. I see it as like having collision insurance - you probably won't need it, but it can come in handy.

Just some thoughts, your mileage may vary.

A-#1...I wouldnt even use Amsoil oil to start a bonfire with using wet wood, While IT MAY be a good product...its main claim to fame is its PYRAMID scheme of retailing!
B-#2...Its NOT a nationally available product and ONLY bought thru its retailing "agents" who get a cut out of the profit.
C-#3... Its not an iota better than MANY nationally retailed oils that have been PROVEN, over and over again and are backed up by empirical data..as compared to "published data" on the internet!
D-#4...If the "oil" in question passes ALL ( again..ALL) of the specifications required by the engine maker ( which MOST 10W-30 oils DO NOT pass the diesel requirements) then the oil is OK to use. If 15W-40 Chevron is "OK" to use ( per my Kubota dealer) ( and its what I use in my ISC Cummins) then Im POSITIVE that 5W-40 SYN Rotella is OK to use!

End of sermon about "amsoil" products!
