B7800 quit while running and won't restart

I've had the same problem - yesterday as a matter of fact. I carefully went through both PTO switches, both seat switches, and anything else I could find. I then fiddled with the safety switch under the rocker pedal and after a few minutes of doing that, it worked. It didn't appear to have gunk on it - it just needed some wiggling I suppose. I loosened the plastic nut as I was going to take it apart. Somehow in doing so, it fixed the issue. Note: I had already actuated the fwd/reverse numerous times without success. Mine has a spring that comes right out of the switch. Currently, it's on TOP of the bar for the pedal. I assume that is the correct location?

I'm afraid I can't help you with correct position. I'm searching for a service manual for mine. I had trouble with my switch occasionally and then it got worse until it wouldn't start no matter how much I fiddle with it. I sent it to the dealer who replaced the mid PTO safety switch and charged me $200 for part and towing. I never have used that switch and of course, it was not the problem. When I put WD 40 on it, the action between forward and reverse became much easier too. It must not take much to keep it out of the neutral position.

take care,
RU

I think I am gonna try using tri-flow instead of WD-40. That stuff is the bomb for lubricating and such. I also wanted to note that I had given the tractor a good wash the night prior to this happening. When someone else mentioned having the problem especially with mowing, that leads me to believe that debris likely flies up and sticks to/around that spring in such a way that the internal switch doesn't actuate. I also noticed that the wires leading to mine are especially tight. I cannot help but think this must put some strain on the internal electrical connections.

I bet you are right. I was mowing when it quit the last time. I was thinking of trying to rig some kind of a little shield to protect it from the worst of the blow back. I'll look into the tri-flow. I was thinking of a dry lube for RV's; something that wouldn't attract more dust. Would the tri-flow be better? might order from Amazon.

thanks,

I use tri-flow on bike chains and things that go "boom". Neither are things I like to be especially dusty, but are often prone to getting that way. I think anything wet could potentially allow dust to stick. Tri-flow seems to keep it's lubricating value despite being dirty, which is why I love it for bike chains. You know... a really easy "cap" to make a cap off a narrow aerosol can (mouse, hair spray, etc), turn it upside-down, then cut out a notch for the spring/bar and find a way to attach it - maybe even a zip-tie. That would place a nice cylindrical hard-plastic sleeve over the whole mess and keep quite a bit of gunk out of there. You could also probably make some sort of bushing for the spring/rod so that no gunk got inside the cap. This is definitely a design weakness as it is. If it gets to be a problem, I might wire in a switch that returns to neutral when released so that I can basically manually bypass that safety switch, but with another I can operate with my hand from on TOP of the tractor. This it won't always be disabled - only when holding in the manual switch during starting. This way it is still pretty safe. Have to think about that.

Wow, if you do that, please post. Lot's of people have this problem. Probably everyone that owns a b7800 :) I'd like to see how you do it and how it works.

Great idea about the cap. Think I'll go dig into the garage trash can.

thanks,

Old thread, same question.

B7800. Started it up, backed it out, it quit.

No, it won't crank, but... which of the safeties would make it shut off? Seat and PTO? Anything else?

HST pedal center sensor switch, seat switch, PTO engagement switch. Lack of clutch switch engagment prevents the starter from spinning (at least on my former L3200, if I recall).
