I got my '82 B8200 (hydro) a few months ago, but haven't used the PTO until today when I had to do some mowing. I can only engage the PTO with the engine stopped; if I try to engage it with the engine running, even with the clutch all the way in and the range selector in neutral it just grinds. I did manage to jam it in a couple of times but it doesn't seem right, but it doesn't seem right that it should only engage with the engine stopped, either. Is my clutch out of adjustment, or is that the way it works?

Thanks

I'm not that familiar with the B8200, but it sure sounds to me like you have a clutch problem. Do you have a problem with other shifting, like putting the tractor in gear with the engine running. Of course, with a hydro you can change ranges without using the clutch if you're sitting still and do not have the hydro pedal depressed. But you can try depressing both the hydro pedal a little and the clutch at the same time in neutral, then try to shift the range selector and if it grinds, too, then I'd say the clutch is not releasing. Maybe an adjustment, or maybe something more serious.

As bird stated I think its the clutch. Try ingauging it on a hill, if you start free-wheeling then the clutch is working if not, it maybe that the disc is rusted to the flywheel. Good luck and let us know what you find.

Thanks for your note, and Von's too. The speed selector does grind a little sometimes when going from neutral to mid range; actually it grinds if it isn't totally in gear and it sometimes takes a little fiddling to get it engaged.

I suspect a rusted clutch, too, although I am going to look at the engagement adjustment first in case I get lucky. However, can anyone tell me how much trouble it is to open the clutch up and break it loose? Never done that on a Kubota, but I have been into the transmissions of a couple of BMW motorcycles.

We used to free up cars by starting them in gear. Maybe if you start it up with a rotory cutter on it and at a little higher RPM, or some other load on the pto it might free the clutch up. Its worth a try before you have to split the tractor.

Aaah, memories of the old days, Von./w3tcompact/icons/smile.gif When I was a kid, we had a little 2-cylinder, gasoline, hand cranked John Deere that set outside behind the barn, and the clutch would stick and you simply could not get it into gear. So I'd put it in low gear, about half throttle, pull hard and fast on the crank, jump out of the way, climb on from behind as it took off, stand on the clutch with my left foot and the brakes with my right foot, and the clutch would pop loose and everything was OK until it was left sitting for a few days without being used again. Gosh, I was glad when Dad had that clutch replaced. I still just wonder at the fact that I never got run over or killed by that tractor.

BMWDave, I've never had a clutch stick on a hydro, but wonder whether you could chain the tractor to a big tree, low range, hold the clutch pedal down, and step down on the hydro pedal. Would that possibly pop it loose?

Bird,
At one time I had an auto restoration Business that did mostly Porsches, Jag, MB,and other euro cars. Every spring I would get a few calls from frantic owners with this same problem. I would tell them what to do and still end up going out there and doing it myself because the owner tried and almost drove thru the back of the garage. Would have to charge them $50.00 for my travel time and the 1min. of work. They would ***** untill I told them the price of a new clutch. Then the $50.00 came out of the wallet alot easier. As to BMWDave's problem I think a load on the pto will work, maybe a rototiller will work. Just put it on the ground and start it with the pto on.

Von, Bird, and others,

I talked to the Kubota dealer earlier this week. He suggested I run the loader bucket against something solid (like a tree trunk) and try to push it down with the clutch in and the hydro in low. Said it should break loose.

I tried running the mower with the clutch in, not enough drag to break it loose.

If they have to go in and fix it they estimated about 5 hours, around $350. I'll try the stump saturday.....

thanks all

I agree, I think that's the thing to do. Let us know how it works out.

Got it broke loose this afternoon. Put a chain around a big cedar and hooked the other end to the hitch and ran out to the end a few times with the clutch in, in top gear. After about the second time it came loose. A little noisy, and not 100% loose but the pto will now engage with only a small bump. I hope/expect it'll loosen up with more use.
