Boondox, as Vermont is close to Maine- can you go over to Polecat's place and take away his coffee pot?
And parents: use this as a lesson. Talk to your kids about caffeine before their friends get them hooked.

Wait a few hours. No rush if the hen isn't pecking them, but definitely get them taking water. The pellets and even the granules are probably too much for the little birds. You want chick mash. Easy to eat, digest, and higher in protein for getting them growing fast.

It's OK to take them away from mom. Most chicks never see their mom anyway. They do need to be kept warm (around 90 degrees), draft free, good bedding, water and feed small enough they can eat. The pic of your feed looks a bit too large for baby chicks (alot of it anyway). I'm sure they can scratch around the feed and find plenty to eat.

Baby chicks have no way of regulating their body temp. After the brooding period (10 to 14 days) they don't need as much attention.

That is caused from a temperature or humidity problem during the incubation process.

Polecat:

It seems to me my mom would make up oakmeal and cream of wheat in water for them to eat... We raised them for a long time but I wasn't in charge of the chicks. only the damd old meas arse rooster! finally shot his behind! one too many times of him sneaking up and spuring me. I must have booted that sucker 100 times! it still never learnt I was bigger than him... Punted him after he spured me and he went 30+ feet in the air! and wouldn't ya know it as he was comming down he was flapping his way back at me! Seemed he didn't like his laying hens messed with! we never had problems with the cats or dogs messing with them but that rooster kept most everything in-line. there was a few the were pecked to death but wasn't sure WHO did it usually the ones who were less than 2~3 weeks old and newly introduced back into the hen house. They didn't seem to be ate any just pecked to death. our's were about 30% feed and rest free range too. We would toss out any old bread, crackers cereal ect. basically anything that had grain in it as a base the big ones would eat fast as they could.

We ate that old rooster after I took care of him for the last time, I was very saticfied to be eating him too! even though it was tough and old as heck! lol /forums/images/graemlins/laugh.gif Guess I got the last laugh!

We had maybe 15 total at most. usually kept 4~5 NEW ones and would cook up the others as they got 1~2 yrs old. kept a few of the good ones who laid lots of eggs and such. sold them as fryers too. needless to say we always had EGGS and plenty of checken in the freezer. My brother and mom usually took care of the cleaning and chopping. while I fed and cleand the coop and eggs. I watched and kept them on our side of the road most of the time... When we had a pair of coons as pets back then they managed to get into trouble with that dambe old rooster and I laughed so much I nearly fell over from passing out! one coon was trying to get into the food pile and the other was being chased about the yard with that rooster nearly attached to it's butt! lol. I usually set the food out and let the coons run after it and that kept that dam bird away from comming after me! coons never seemed to catch on though! lol

Anyhow this was back in the 70's so my memory isn't quite what it used to be. also MOM worked for a food packaging company which made hamberhelper stuff. She got lots of that stuff free from the plant as feed. just had to soak it bunch first..
