I spotted this very young deer in the grass while walking my dog around the outside of my fenced pasture today. It was curled up barely a foot off of where I had mowed a couple of days ago. My leashed dog never noticed it and I kept moving. Three hours later I was curious so I walked out to the area and it was still there. It's curled up in a ball about a foot in diameter. I'll check on it again in the morning.

At least this one was outside of my electric fence. A year or so ago, I found one inside of the fence. Not sure if momma' dropped that one in the pasture or what? It was not far from where I have a break in the fence that I open while mowing so I opened it and the next day the youngster was gone.

Pretty!

We have newborn calves walk through barbed and electric fences with no deterrent. I think it takes a while before all systems are functional.

All the best,

Peter

Calf is veal.
What is a baby dear other than tender?

Have read that fawns have only a very faint scent initially after being birthed. Might be why your dog didn't pick up on the deer being so close.
yes that's right, the predators will smell the placenta that's how they find the calf so the mother will hurry up and eat it and wash her calf to remove as much as the sent as possible.
