Grading Back blade setting

When using the rear blade just how low do most of you set it? I plowed snow for the first time last night and most of the time I had it all the way down but it sounds like it's scraping the heck out of the blade. I'm new to all of this so maybe that's normal.

I set mine up while its in the garage and level,then set it so its just off the floor by a 1/2inch or so.My drive is gravel so I drive in reverse,keeping the backblade in the normal position so it doesn't dig into the stones and drop them all over the yard.If your blade has a replaceable edge I wouldn't worry too much,thats what its there for. my2cents,Tom

Joe,
Sounds normal when the ground is froze,and if you have shoes on your lblade you might adjust them a half inch or to keep the blade from touching the ground while your blade floats.

Last year was my first year with the blade on my gravel drive, and I spent the winter doing a real bang-up job of getting every last flake of snow off down to clean ground - had the best looking driveway in the neigborhood. I was happy as a pig in $hit until...I saw all of my driveway plowed onto the lawn in the spring! I now set my blade about 1 inch above the ground, and live with the thin layer of snow I leave benind. This is easy to do with position control, woud be much harder without it.

Everyone experiences scarping and banging while plowing with the blade on the ground as I agree with Blu21 that the replaceable edge is made to be replaced. With frozen ground I cant imagine you have hat serious of problem with the stones. Try turning the blade around so the front now faces backwards and drive forwards. I hear driving backwards while pushing the blade puts additional stress on the 3pt. hitch. Happy Plowing! /w3tcompact/icons/smile.gif

I have skid shoes which I set about 1/2 inch when on the blacktop and higher when I go onto the grass or gravel. I drive forwards and "windrow" the snow. I can't see driving backwards since I only have two reverse gears. One would be too fast and the other too slow and I don't want to strain my neck all the time anyway. I could go through a foot of snow driving forwards easily so can't see the big advantahe in driving backwards. (Glad I have skid shoes though, money well spent)
