Fastpat,

Don't know if you've bought one yet or not, but Kioti DOES list a 9" for a 2385, might be a typo on the web or the dealer misread, but a may be worth another check. I haven't had any experiance with a bucket less that 12" but I have heard some soils get packed in and have a hard time coming out of a small bucket. I have at times had to clean out by hand a 16" on a mini ex that got filled up and wouldn't let go. You'd just have to make a judgement call based on the dirt in your area. I don't know what you've got in SC.

So what's wrong with making the trenches a little wider? I only have an 18" bucket. I trenched for my gutter drain pipes with it, no problem. Very quick. The only time I wished I had the 9" bucket is when I trenched for gas lines. These trenches had to be lined with 4" of sand underneath and another 4" on top of the gas pipe. I had to buy, move, install twice as much sand as I would have with a 9" bucket. Other than special circumstances like that, I think the small bucket is a waste. I know guys that have the 9", and they never use it.

I have a 9 and a 12 inch... I have like having the 9 for all sort of things like, pulling out all the mustang grape vines between my pecan and old growth oak trees... and is sure is nice to make a little trench when needed for water lines etc...

I'm thinking a small bucket would work better for working at a stump removal project. Also we have a water line project where a narrow strip is cleared through the woods. Can you just imagine how much more of a gravel pile if we use a 24" bucket as opposed to a 9". Space is going to be at a premium here and we have to get back down there to backfill. The smaller the pile is awaiting a shove in the ditch the better.

We have the classic red clay with 6-12 inches of top soil over. Right now, with the soil being very wet, I'd predict difficulty getting soil release from the bucket that I have now, the smaller 9 inch would be more difficult.

Still, digging a trench for a water line would be best done with a bucket narrower than 12 inches.

I want a hydrant at the back of the property for fire fighting duty if necessary, with several lateral lines to various buildings. That will require a 500-600 foot trench.

While doing it with equipment you already have would be nice, it sounds to me that you maybe should consider renting a trencher. That would give you the narrow trench and pulverize the material as it works making for easy backfilling. You would just have to make sure that the savings in gravel would be more than the rental or the price of a new bucket for that matter.

I have a 9 and 24 inch for my KB2375. The 9 is good for digging stumps and breaking roots along with digging in rock piles. The 9 inches and three fingers work in places pretty good. For trenching, it will pack up if the ground is wet or clay. I can usually shake out the stuck material though. Never tried a 12. It might do the same. I use the 24 for moving large amounts of material and cleaning out my small pond. It dumps well. A 16 or 18 would be good to have also, but I make due with the two I have and figure I can use the money towards another attachment.

I just called my Kioti dealer and he says the smallest bucket for my back hoe is 12 inches wide. I need to dig some trenches and think a much narrower bucket might work better, say a 8-9 inch one. Any of you using a small bucket like that?

Thank you, gentlemen. Do you remember what brand or who made your 9 in. bucket? I have a Kioti 2385 backhoe, which works very well, so I need one that fits that model. I have quite a bit of trenching to dig to run drainage pipe to route water away from the house.
