I would like to know how folks rig up a back hoe for lifting objects. For example how would you sling a large rock to place on a retaining wall. Are there commercial slings or do you just use pieces of chain with hooks on them to fabricate a net around the rocks? (yes I know a thumb would be useful but I don't have one) Thanks!

I’ve heard of people using tire chains as a sling for rocks. Never tried it myself but it sounds like a good idea. I would think you could attach the chain sets for two tires together with repair links if you needed a larger sling. I do wonder how one gets the chain off the rock after it is set on the wall though.
