In my experience, driveway sealer can fill cracks up to about an eighth of an inch. Larger than that, you need a crack filler, either a thicker liquid or a caulk like material or, for the big cracks, asphalt patching material. I imagine they don't do it on roadways because of either the cost or the fact that the roadway would have to be shut down while the sealer cures/drys. It would also mean repainting the lines, an additional cost.

A quick check at AccuWeather reveals that it does get below freezing in Mt Washington, KY.

Don't underestimate the value of a black paint job. Many people think it is much classier ($$) than old grey pavement. Parking lots with oil puddles in the stalls look much better after the black paint and we find that the surface is smoother for shopping carts and walking.

( I've seen them seal the cracks in the roadway, that I understand, but what he did was squeegee down a seal coat, which does not fill cracks, in my experience......and, they don't put down this type seal coat on the roadway, but they do it in parking lots all the time. Which method is better, I wonder? Why do it in parking lots and driveways, but not on the road? It made sense to me to try and keep the water from being able to run down into cracks and freeze, but again, the top coats I've seen sold for driveways do not do this, hence my question...............

also, does Mt. Washington, Kentucky get cold enough to freeze?" )

1st the question about "why drives and parking lots, but NOT roads". The average roadway gets repaved every few years. Most residential drives stay on the job for years. It's an attemt to make them hold up a few years longer.

I've negelected to seal the drive at my farm over the years. It's almost returned to being a gravel driveway again.

And YES, it does freeze in Mt.Washington. It's 17 balmy degrees as we speak. Winter temperatures vary from our record low (in 1994) of -22, to monday afternoon's predicted high of 70.

Coal tar emulsions sold in the hardware stores and the tack coat Road Maintenance puts down have different properties. /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif
