I have a theory here...

The low-speed circuit isn't protected by the fuel shut off solenoid, but the high speed circuit is.

That's why they want you to go to 1/2 throttle before shutting off the engine.

This closed off the low-idle speed circuit, and the solenoid closes off the high speed circuit.

Makes sense to me. Probably wrong

Wouldn't say not harmful, blew out side of muffler on 782 last week!!

If carb adjusted right, usually does NOT happen, IMHO in two cadets over 30 yrs.

I don't think carb adjustment will cure most of them. You may have just been lucky. My 1450 would usually not backfire if I let is idle for a minute and shut it off while idling. That doesn't work with my 3235. Setting it 1/2 to 3/4 throttle before shutting off seems to work every time.
