Hi people
I would like to build a towable backhoe and since I dont want to renvent the wheel, I would like to ask if anybody has plans, detailed pics, other ideas that you will be willing to share. let me point out that I have the tools to do it, so that's not the problem.
Thanks.

there is a thread ( cannot off hand remember where) on tbn and to give the author credit he made a very good point, keep in mind you are not trying to compete with a full size backhoe but are trying to be more cost effective than day labor, I built a towable backhoe several years ago, bronze bushings, etc, etc, after I completed my project (about 10 hrs of work) the machine sat for several years without use, I never loaned it out due to liability issues, and made the purchaser sign a waiver, now my .02 cents save your money on bushings/grease joints, and snazzy/complicated torch/plasma cutout parts, invest that money in good hydraulic components, my recommendation is to weld grade 8 or harder washers at the pivot points, use grade 5 bolts and check them for wear, my friend did this, bolts show no appreciable wear after 100 hrs of use, use common channel to make your bucket, look at lackender backhoes to eliminate the linkage at the bucket Ie: less pivot points/less things to wear out, I would not fool with making a curved main arm either the added benefits far out way the aggravation of getting everything lined up correctly and straight when assembled, unless you have access to a machine shop with wood fixtures, unfortunately I have always leaned towards functionability compared to cosmetically appealing, check with surplus centers for quality hydraulic products, keep it simple,an if in doubt build it stout,

Thanks for the detailed response. I will make use of the advice, specially since they are coming from a person that is experienced about the issue.

You'll have to buy your own plans but this guy has one of the best guides I know of:
search for 500passwords on www. youtube . com

I have received some excellent suggestions on this thread.

I hadn't heard wa****a's advice yet, though, about the grade 8 bolts and grade 5 washers. I'm going to seriously look into that.

There are some very talented builders in that group. I like the interface of this site better, but I do like how the Yahoo groups have the option to store files in a central location for access. It would be nice to have that here too. How many times have members answered the "what are standard measurements for Cat. 0 vs. Cat. 1 3 pt. Hitches" question. I'm sure there are plenty of others too.

Maybe Muhamed is monitoring and will see the suggestion.

One more recommedation: Price a new one. I recently payed just a bit over $5000 for a JD 46 attachment. Yes, ignoring the labor I could have built one cheaper. Not a lot cheaper. I am giving an educated guess that there would be $3000 in a homemade one. Fittings and hoses add up fast, not to mention valves and cylinders. I own an NC plasma cutter, so would have made all my own plates. Even so, I would have spent all summer making one. Instead of building and painting and guessing it wouldnt break my tractors butt off, I spent my time working: moved half a dozen seven foot spruces, routed buried cable for electrical service to my shed 300 feet underground, dug some stumps, buried more wire to the front gate 120 feet away, dug some concrete footings out, dug out some rotted off stumps, and more stuff. When I first looked at the John Deere small backhoe attachments they cost over $9K. When I could get one for about $5K, I jumped. No regrets. I am sure I will never wear it out, but it has been used more than I would have guessed so far this year. On the other hand, I build more attachments than I buy, so I understand your desire to build it. Good luck. Keep us posted, lots of good ideas on TBN as you progress.

I think those of us who build do it because we like the challenge and the creativity of building. There's also something very satisfying about using something I built myself. I you don't enjoy the actual build and fabrication it makes no sense to do it yourself. There's a lot of work into these projects.

the other good thing about building it your self is that you can build it to what your needs are.:D

True. I only have to meet my needs, not the generic needs of a few thousand potential buyers.

Some real good advise here. Don't build one to save money. I figure with the savings over buying a 3pth hitch backhoe equate to about $2.50 per hour over buying one. Some of my costs, 250 for shielding gas, $150 for 5 10lb rolls of welding wire, $600 for hoses and fittings, $1000 for cylinders and controls (all purchased at excellent sale prices)$500 for steel, and $250 for misc pins and steel bushings, grinding wheels, bandsaw blades, drill bits, holesaws. Probably something like $3,000 to build. After all is said and done, I could have maybe borrow a couple of grand and bought one and spent the time working on the Kitchen.............

Here is a video of me working the backhoe last weekend. Its hard to stop smiling while digging in the dirt.
