I picked up a used Woods 7500 backhoe (7.5 foot dig depth) a couple of years ago for use with my NH TC33D. It was originally set up as a 3 pt hitch BH, but I got the new (at that time) Woods 4 point quick hitch subframe and switched it over to mount on that. (That subframe system is GREAT, by the way). I've been happy with the set-up, and finding it used saved me some $

My tractor is a little lighter than your JD 4400, but it handles the 7500 with ease. You might be able to handle the Woods 9000 on yours (9 foot dig depth).

If you are going new, Woods has an updated line. Take a look at the BH70-X or the BH-80X. They've made a number of improvements (higher digging forces, etc.)

I did some homework on the issue myself. I finally decided on the JD 448 for my 4400. The 447 was less expensive, but I have a tendency to upgrade and went with the 448. The dealer is waiting for some of the installation parts so I should have it mounted by the end of next week. I went with the Deere because of the subframe mount. Some of the aftermarket backhoes offer subframe kits, but the Deere price was right and I have a good working relationship with the service dept. at my dealer. I'm also having a third SCV added while they are installing the power beyond. I'm only paying for the parts on that because the installation is the same as with the power beyond. Although I've never seen any pictures or evidence of damage to a tractor caused by a 3 PT. mount backhoe, I don't want to learn by experience on that subject.

Elginfarm,

I am anxious to hear how you like the 448 on your 4400. I have the same tractor an know where I can get a like new 448 but I am apprehensive to spend the additional $1095 for the subrame kit and adapter frame weldment plate. Not to mention the RSA and power beyond making the grand total $1709 over the price of the 448.

Aside from that and most importantly, do you feel the 4400 is big enough to handle the 448 and let it perform to its full potential? Also, what are your thoughts on the subframe? Any negatives?

Thanks,
Bill

Wow I too have a 4400 and want a backhoe. But with me I pretty much want the cheapest one I can get. What I really want is one of these but if I could go cheaper with my 4400 somehow I would rather do that. Harbor Freight Tools - Quality Tools at the Lowest Prices I think it would be neat though to pull this thing behind my gator to wherever I wanted to go.

My heap 4400 came with a 47. I can't imagine another brand BH that would mount & dismount with the ease of the JD piece. I can have mine on or off in, literally, less than 3 minutes!
