Dumbdog, I can dig a 6ft hole pretty fast with mine as long as I'm not in ROOTS! You're sure right about the repositioning taking a lot of time. Just trying to figure out how to get around that hole while avoiding all the others I had already made was a major task.
The holes that I had refilled were way too soft to drive on, so it was a little puckery at times trying to get to where I could break roots on the monster stump!
Cliff I started laughing as soon as I read the first part of your post. I've been on TBN long enough to know that I should want MORE seat time! But look at it this way, it took me Sun-Wed to do all the stumps I did, and I was ready for a new task on the second day! Thanks for the replies guys. John

Nice pictures John. Your description is the way I go about it as well. I got to run a Hitatchi 300 trackhoe recently to pull all the big ones on my property and that was a blast. I was removing stumps in 15 seconds what would take all weekend with my BX. Both ways are fun though.

One of these days, I just have to rent me one of those when I'm in a hurry. I bet those things are just awesome. John

Brand new to TBN. Love the site - learned a bunch already.

I've got a whole lot of little stumps to deal with - most 6" to 8" diameter from a mixture of pines and hardwoods. Just got a Deere 2210 and have been reading about the backhoe Woods makes for it. Would this setup work or is it just going to be way too small to do stump removal? Or could I use the FEL (with toothbar)?

The backhoe looks like fun, but when I called the dealer he thought it might be too small to get any useful work done.

I have a 4310 with a 48 hoe and I think that you should have no trouble with those size trees with the hoe. The FEL was not designed for that kind of work.
I find that I can take out any size stump as long as I have the patience to deal with it. Hardwood is certainly more difficult than softwood with oak being the hardest for me.
The biggest mistake that I made when I first started to dig stumps, was to dig too close on the really large ones. Dig farther away and get a large trench around the entire stump. Then you can start to move inward and chew away at the dirt and roots that are holding the stump in the ground.
Good luck

Richard

Dicker gave you a pretty good answer. If it's a backhoe, and it has pressure, it will dig. How you do the digging is the trick. Dicker is exactly right about moving out to the far reaches! Roots are smaller further out, and easier to break. You will do a lot of moving back and forth to dig all four sides, and will learn how to place the dirt so you can still access when you have to come back and dig the same side again, and sometimes AGAIN.
With Pines that have deep tap roots you have to dig as far down as possible, and sometimes if the hoe isn't long, you'll just cut off as much as possible, remove that, and cover up the remaining tap. I, myself find the Oaks we have around here to be much easier than pines because they only have surface and just below the surface roots. They pop out pretty easily.
I know the 2210 is a smaller tractor, but I think you can dig those stumps. Just be prepared for it to take some time, and don't lift the rear wheels off the ground, let the rear tires help stabilize the tractor. John
EDIT: I forgot to say WELCOME TO TBN! J

Steve2210,
John and I have both shown what the "little" tractors can do with their backhoes. Here is a link that shows my biggest stump. Now this one took considerable time, but I have removed many in the size range you speak of and don't think you will have a problem at all with the backhoe set-up that you are looking at.

stumps

And John, Yeah they are a blast. The one thing I kept thinking was how smooth they are to operate.

WOW! That thing was bigger than your BX! I know you had a ball doing that one. John
