bad fuel.

Strong case for buying fuel at locations that have high fuel volume. I only buy diesel at locations where there is a frequent stream of diesel users filling up. New fuel is added almost daily at those locations. Truck stops, even better. Those pumps dispense thousands of gallon of diesel a day, multiple tanker loads of the stuff. Lowest risks of a bad fuel purchase, and price very competitive over even local farmer's coop fueling locations.

Toyboy,
I have been stricken with rust, dirt and water before, but not bugs. Yep, just another reason to always use a screened funnel.
Like many I suspect, I was always irritated to have to ALWAYS be waiting on the funnel to drain.
But I was also pretty stubborn to not spend nearly 20$ on a silly funnel....however, my "Mr. Funnel AF3CB Fuel Filter" was one purchase I wished I would have made years ago!

Thanks for the heads up Toyboy and Barnie...just ordered the F8C from O'Reilly which will be in Tuesday. Thought I would start with the 5GPM size...will likely also get another for cabin use. I know when I am holding a 5 gallon jug I want it to flow quickly. :) Can decide size for second one after using the F8C.

Hi Tom,

I know the FC3B funnel only flows 3.5 gallons per minute (GPM), but I didn't think any of my 5-gallon fuel cans would even allow fuel to exit any faster than that; so I didn't go with the higher flowing rate F8C (5- GPM) funnel. So I figured I didn't need a funnel that exceeds what my fuel can will deliver.....

Once you've used your F8C funnel, please report back here as to if you think it was worth your $$ or not.

Hi BarnieTrk...funny you should mention! The O'Reily's Auto locally had an F3C in stock and I went in and purchased it yesterday (not sure what the difference is with your F3CB?). When I looked back at the Mr Funnel web site I actually had wanted the F3C...as opposed to the FC1...but somehow ordered the larger F8C. The store manager said I can come in Tuesday and take a look at the F8C to determine if I want that one also. I will probably buy another F3C for our cabin...many engines and small gas tanks there also :)

Let me know if there is a different F3C"B" that I should be aware of?? Thanks...Tom R

P.S. I will report in after I have used...I have many tanks I fill and am very concerned about dirt and water...note at this point all are gasoline small engine 25HP and lower. TMR

Tom,
I don't know what, if any, are the differences between a F3CB and a F3C funnel. I just was at the Mr. Funnel web page and they list the models differently yet: F1, F3, F8...so maybe they are simply revising their part number system.

Now we know the F3 size funnel is larger than the smaller F1 size funnel. But what hasn't been mentioned yet is that the F3 funnel has the filter raised above the bottom of the funnel so you always have an ounce or two of fuel left over in the funnel each time you use it. This design allows water and debris to collect in the residual sump area at the bottom of the funnel without obstructing the filter. But this means you must "dump the sump" after each use. The smaller F1 funnel does not have a sump area.

This also means, after you've transferred your fuel, IF you are not careful, you could hastily pick up the funnel and the fuel left in the funnel sump can slosh around - ending up on you and/or the ground/floor, making a mess of things if on you or if you are in an enclosed area.

What I've done in the past (typically when it's convenient for me- such as when I'm on pavement, in my shed, etc.) I use a small covered can that I can pour the ounce or two of fuel trapped in the sump reservoir. Personally, I like this design, because I can see if I had any debris in my fuel. Which means of course the funnel is doing what I intended for it to do - protect whatever I'm fueling from getting fed crappy fuel. Once the 'catch can' has enough fuel in it, I can simply run it through the funnel and start over collecting the residual sump fuel. :2cents:

BarnieTrk...I have already thought I would drain the funnel sump into a glass jar the first couple of times just to see if it is catching anything. I like the idea of a separate gas can to accumulate the sump material and occasionally run it back through the filter to reclaim the good fuel.

They say NOT to use it when you fill up (5 gallon can) at the gas station. Seems to make sense to me. Also, they advise only add fuel conditioners like Stabil etc directly to the equipment tank as opposed to the storage gas can...as the conditioner may emulsify the water and allow it to go through the filter...is that your process?

Probably going to fill up a 5 gallon can today and give it a try on a couple of my machines that need some gas. :)

BTW...do you switch between diesel and gasoline using the same Mr Funnel? Any clean-up between the two rules? Thanks...Tom R

They say NOT to use it when you fill up (5 gallon can) at the gas station. Seems to make sense to me.

Sure, and we know this makes good sense because the gas station fuel is BEING PUMPED at a much higher 'delivery rate' than what our funnels are rated for. Thus, spillages could occur very easily there. You don't want the spillage waste & they don't want the mess. Not having our fuel pumped, we don't see those 'delivery rates' when trans-filling fuel from our gravity-fed fuel cans to our equipment.

Also, they advise only add fuel conditioners like Stabil etc directly to the equipment tank as opposed to the storage gas can...as the conditioner may emulsify the water and allow it to go through the filter...is that your process?

No, I don't. I do add my fuel additives to my fuel cans, then add the treated fuel to my equipment/vehicles. My procedure may allow for emusified water to enter the equipment fuel system, but that doesn't scare me because it is EMULSIFIED. It is my understanding that any moisture that may become emulsified - will stay emulsified and not cause my equipment any harm and simply be passed through the combustion process. So, I use my funnel when trans-filling treated fuel from my cans to the piece of equipment / vehicle fuel tank to capture any un-emulsified water, rust and dirt. I store my portable fuel cans sealed; they are not open to the air. So the amount of moisture that may be emulsified is limited to the amount of moisture I received during the fuel station fill up. I will also say that I try not to keep or maintain treated, sealed, canned fuel for extended periods; no more than 6-12 months. Most of the time I try to use it up within two months....just 'cause.

BTW...do you switch between diesel and gasoline using the same Mr Funnel? Any clean-up between the two rules?

Yes, I use the same funnel for diesel, gasoline and my 2-stroke mix fuels. However, I will empty the funnel sump after every use. Once the transfilling has been completed and the sump emptied, I turn the funnel over to allow it to dry and cover it with a clean rag (being careful not to damage the filter inside the funnel). If I don't anticipate using the funnel for a while, and it has dried for a day or so, I typically will place the funnel inside a plastic store bag to keep it dust-free until its next use.

The above procedure works for me!

When I got into the tank I remove 10 to 15 lady bugs. I almost S@@@ my pants. The only thing I can come up with is. they were in my fuel noozle.

Never underestimate the power of Asian Lady Bugs. Nearly impossible to keep out of buildings. Have found them inside malfunctioning light switches, water softener, computer, and of course throughout the entire house in general from October to April. Best control method is Shop Vac.

I made a cap for my fuel novel out of a 3" piece of 3/4" PVC and 3/4" PVC cap.

The only problem (for me anyway) is I can't tell when the tank is about full. As I empty the 5 gal into the tank, I'm constantly checking the level when I've poured 3 to 3.5 gal in it. I'm always afraid I'll over fill and make a mess. My sending unit gasket will weep if I fill it to the top. It's easier for me to fill to 4/5 full then change the gasket.
