I tacked a ball on a tractor in a similar manner over 30 years ago. There was no nut on the bolt. It's the first weld I remember having to fail.

i don't know if it is my eyes or my sense of smell, but I can not weld. Every time in the past that I tried I got a migraine headache right afterwards. Yes I was wearing a hood.

Put some plugs in your nose, and that will eliminate 50% of the uncertainty right there.

grind off ALL old paint/rust /etc prior to welding if at all possible.

I learned to get the metal as clean as possible after having many of my welds fail. I was just learning and didn't really think it mattered if the rust,paint etc was intact. lol

It sure does make a difference in the quality of the weld if you remove that rust, paint etc and get the metal as clean as possible.

After cleaning the metal first I can make a better and stronger weld. It might take longer to clean and prep the metal but it's sure worth taking the time out to do so.

If the weld fails, you'll just have to go over it again so you're not saving any time not prepping the metal.

I wish I had a picture of it, it was pretty impressive. All that morning when I was out on the derrick watching my company pickup going back and forth on the job site. I was thinking I need to leave that truck up at the office, those guys are going to get my seat muddy!

BTW that's what my welds look like, i use the braille method.

I enjoyed or no.. Not so much really enjoyed the Hobart Institute training in Ohio.. I laughed and thought I knew everything...I took many beatings with that attitude. Fact is Weld and you get better at Welding. Look at the New and don't get caught up in the Old even if it worked good back in the day. Buggy whips worked good back in the day.

I live in one of the Cargo Trailer meccas where they build a whole bunch of them. I could climb under most anyone of them and give this thread life for years. If you own one, do not, I repeat, do not get under your trailer and look at the welds, unless you want to go change your underwear this morning.

My dad's homedepot mesh trailer had some really bad welds on it that looked pretty but didn't penetrate at all. I had to grind a bunch of them out and redo them.

I even almost lost the axle as the welds on the 2 leaf spring hangers on the drivers side broke. I noticed that the axle wasn't sitting straight when I pulled up to the gas pump. I had to temp clamp them down to get it the 1/2 mile home to re weld it.

Thankfully those welds didn't break when my dad was on a trip from Kansas to Arkansas with it.

I will never buy one of those home cheapo trailers. And I bout mess my drawers when ever I get near one on the road. lol

The trailer has a little sticker on it that says buy this trailer At Home Depot.

I'm thinking of making a bumper sticker and saying. Don't Buy This Piece Of sh"t trailer From Home Depot. lol

It was windy here yesterday and the wind was shaking that trailer around and it was flexing really bad.

If I was welding a trailer I'd make darn sure that the welds were done right. If I messed up I'd grind out the weld and redo it.

And if I still couldn't get the welds done right then I'd pay a pro to do it before I took it down the road.
