I just have a chunk of creasoted piling I beachcombed that I put on the box blade when I need a little more weight. Just secure it with a line and has never come off.

Do you worry that the blade wasn't designed to handle the forces of that extra weight? I think your best option would be to make something that could hold cement blocks (unless you have something else for weight). That way you could add as much weight as needed and pricewise they are cheap.

I carry about 10 suitcase weights on my box blade as illustrated above. Have done this for some time....but added a few more this year. I've got mine on a King Kutter box blade. Never had one bounce off yet....and I cover some pretty rough ground. The extra weight and fluid in my tires keep the rear end safely on the ground.

I also have a receiver hitch on my box blade. I have a HD, reciever-mounted, expanded-steel "box" which I had made to put on a 4 wheeler (to carry bear bait pails) at one time. I'm going to mount that box over the top of my box blade using the reciever hitch. I'm going to mount it "backwards". Should be good for extra 100 lbs of weight and will haul a HD log chain, chain saw, and tools. May mount it today....and I will snap a pic.

Robert, you are going to need a heavier duty box for your new tractor anyway. The new tractor has the capability to bend up your current box pretty easy. Either add a whole lot of reinforcing which equals more weight of sell your current box and get an industrial quality unit. They weigh in between 1000 and 1400lbs, depending on what you would end up getting. That should help out with the ballast problem and you won't ever have to remove weights.

Just saying

Never did get the pic of the expanded metal box that will attach to my receiver....as I gotta cut some of its mount to get it to fit correctly. The box measures about 1' x 3' and will ride above center of the box blade and be held in place via the receiver hitch. Instead of mounting the box....I spent the afternoon wrestling a flat tire. :(

Anyway.....here is what my BB looks like with 12 suitcase weights hanging on it. With this weight and my loaded tires....the rears stay on the ground.

Wound up getting a used 6ft box blade that is very heavy. As soon as I got it home I welded up a support box type of deal using some T-post and angle iron. Centered it behind the 3 point set up on top of the box and will use 16 1/4" steel plates (18x20) I had sitting around which weigh 25lbs each. 400lbs plus the heavy box blade should be plenty, and I also have a 1" thick steel plate that weighs over 100lbs if need be. I won't be lifting the plates due to injuries, but thats what they make kids for. ;)

DSCF1292.jpgI built this ballast box a couple of months ago to ride atop my Modern Mfg 6 ft box blade. The box blade weighs 700 lbs, and with the added ballast box, brings total weight up to the recommended 1000 lbs for my Kubota Mx5100. Works well as it is easily installed and removed with my FEL. Good luck
