Well I had another week without snow so no snowmobiling for me.
So week 4 in the shop brought fourth this project.
I bought the FEL in August and have been trying to figure out how I wanted to make a ballast weight and came up with this variation of a weight box I have seen on Craigslist and here.
I wanted to utilize my homemade wheel and front "suit case" weights so I didn't have a bunch of different implements sitting around that only get used some of the time.
I started with a piece of 3"x3"x1/2" angle cut to size for my rear QH, cut 2 pieces of 1/2"x3" flat bar and drilled a 7/8" hole in the ends each. I went to HF and bought a hitch tube ($19.00)and cut it short and welded it in the center. Then some 1/4"x2 1/2" flat bar was cut and welded on the 1/2" angle on either side of the hitch tube to form a channel and make a place for the wheel weights to sit. Next I went to my usual steel yard and bought some 2 1/2"x2 1/2"x3/16" wall square tube and some 3/8"x2 1/2" flat bar to make the center upright and end uprights. I drilled a 1" hole about 6" up from the bottom of all three for a 1"round bar to hold the wheel weights on and then laid out a slot on the tops of each to accept a 1/2"x3" flat bar that will tie the three together and hold my suit case weights. I drilled a 1/2" hole at the bottom of the slot then cut the length on the band saw. and then used the 4 1/2" grinder to clean up the slots. I tacked the whole thing together then I made some 1/2"x2" flat bar for the top link pins and set the the bb on the QH and clamped the bars in place the welded the whole thing up. That was it for Saturday all I have left to make for it is the storage rack with wheels to keep it in the shop out of the way when not on the tractor. Oops the second from the last pic is of my brother in-law and his Cam Am and a snowmobile trail groomer drag we are going to copy for our snowmobile club for our next project! The last pic is of the BB welded but minus the top link mount. I think I have about $35.00 into it and that's only because of the HF hitch tube....but I only used about 6" of it so I guess I can knock off $15.00 off the price!
