It's been a long time since I've had the gear cover off of mine, but I recall a worm gear driving the drive roll. Reversing the motor would put the thrust load on the worm in the opposite direction. There may not be a thrust bearing to handle that loading.
Just a thought. I'd see about a different motor, one that runs the same as the original. Note: when they refer to a motor direction, as CW (or CCW), that usually (but not always!) means looking from the tail end of the motor, not looking at the shaft end!
