Oh, and unless you're really good at skimming, you obviously made it to the end of my post(s)

Seriously, click that FOFOA link I posted...it's insane...it'll make you think. Also, any others, click the mises.org link. There are some good resources there that I think many of you "farmer/country" types will appreciate.

I'd like to meet you some day and have a long talk. I think I could learn a great deal from you.

The older I get... the more I realize I will never have all the answers...

There are a number of TBN members that have certainly provided me with for for thought.

Sometimes, I tend to dwell a lot on things coming down the pike where I live... I like to think of it as getting the word out or a public service...

Been lucky to have lots of older friends that after 25 or 30 years to still be called the kid.

Working around the homestead in the city limits with my tractors is like therapy... keep me grounded... nothing like a couple of hours on a bulldozer to refresh one's outlook... at least for me.

I enjoy your posts and have to confess that TBN can be like an addiction... a good one.

I've spent thousands of hours offshore fishing for fun...spent more money than I care to recall doing it. The gov't is doing all it can to restrict recreational fishing and because of that, my new hobby is "farming" (tractoring)

My point....some here can brag about how they've "made" it in their lifetime. I understand the pride in that...I've lived it because of the policies of past. My family has benefited from it.
My point is, that wasn't exactly "reality." I'm now trying to make my own way into the world and it isn't easy. Sure, this isn't a new phenomenon...I do feel that there is a huge paradigm shift transpiring...I'm trying to deal with it. The facts, in my mind, back my thoughts/motives. I'm just relaying what I believe to be true.

Everyone isn't going to agree with me and I understand that. I just want "evidence" from others to back their thoughts up...not just what they claim to be true.

The internet is a great resource...just try and back it up somehow, some way. Don't just "ignore" me because when called out, you can't provide anything else than what you say.

What you have said/stated here, I can't really disagree with, but if I do, I will provide the reasoning behind why I do so. I hope you understand.

And yes, TBN has been great.

I've stayed away from "Bullion" because of the added uncertainty.

So the option I decided on for direct ownership is coins... mostly US coins.

Not a big fan of Bank Safe Deposit Boxes... they do get robbed and the banks make mistakes... my Grandmother had a loss because they said the bank had lost contact with her... she had an active checking account... it was really sad... some family items were lost forever...

There is a premium for coins and the smaller the denomination, the higher the premium.

On the other hand it might come in handy someday when you can pull out of your pocket a 1/10 ounce, half or full ounce of Gold with certainty.

Not read to the end of the thread yet, but I have read in the past that once the G banned gold ownership, the bank had to monitor the contents of SDBoxes to be sure that there was not gold being withdrawn from them by the owner.

Edit: I am at the end of the thread. schoolsout mentioned "bank holiday" which should suggest the possibility of not being able to access physical property. ultrarunner told of a crime that is more of a crime because the valuables taken had meaning and a legacy. So a safe deposit box might be a place to store documents but the government will have folks either inspect them or hover over the owner if gold is once again confiscated by the government. Our money is said to be backed by the full faith and credit of the American people. The government would be happy to enforce your faith by taking your valuables.

Have to say what started out as a somewhat ho-hum thread (just to me, no offense intended to ultrarunner) has sure turned fascinating. Then the essay by Greenspan that was pasted almost got my hair standing on end.

Thanks for the great advice on buying - I know owning and possessing is not for everyone but for folks like myself that have always been interested it's great. I have plenty of paper assets, and the way things are going I feel less and less security from them.

It's kind of like property to me, it's a tangible thing. Many years ago when I was a young man and looking to move out to the country, an old realtor showed me this small farm. A comment he made has always stuck with me: "there will always be more people, but there's only so much land." I've since sold some of my land for a ROI that I would have never expected, but have to say that holding it even longer would have been better as land prices just keep climbing. Who would have thought 8 dollar corn.

Anyway, kind of think of gold the same way: "there will always be more dollars printed, but there's only so much gold". Now, have to start getting some of it for me! Let the adventure begin..

A good read for you...will take a bit of time, but I think you'd enjoy it.

I am not up on it but when I bought gold, I checked Kitco.com for spot prices, and purchased through coin dealers on Ebay. It was shipped fully insured, and I dealt with an online escrow for payment. But I made my last purchase over a decade ago, and I surely must be behind the times now.

I bought gold to keep and to see me through a potentially hard time so I'd have just one more thing to barter. I don't view it as an investment, and it does not appear in my accounting any differently than blue jeans. I don't track gold prices.

^^ IMO....that's the way gold should be bought.....as a hedge against getting through hard times and chaos.

Most gold is now being bought as a hedge against run-away inflation and against the US economy surviiving.....or simply because money can be made where VOLATILITY exists. Sad situation.

Buying a little gold when the economy is on solid footing is like buying overshoes in July: Good Planning.

I personally dont own any gold.....and I can compare the ROI from my real estate or stock investments with the ROI of gold investors over most 20 year time lines......and show my method to be better. But....the last 5 years?.....not so much.

Advice to new gold bugs: don't go "all-in" on any investment. Life aint a poker game.

:) As one new gold bug, I hear ya.

I'm thinking if you have some cash sitting earning essentially nothing (as this thread attests to), it might be something to get started in, a bit anyway...

...the idea of a possible "hedge to get through hard times" appeals to my survivalist side too. :D

If people used the spare assets that they have lying around hoping to buy gold with to pay off their high interest credit cards or home loans instead, they could be alot better off.

As someone without any debt i can tell you the current market conditions dont affect you as much a those with a debt load. Having gold in the bank may or may not help in bad times, but a debt over your house can leave you living on the street after some greedy banker hits hard.
